Moms, Can You Relate?

A Mother’s Touch

I don’t need a thermometer to tell me that my sweet baby boy has a raging fever. It’s evident from the flushed face and glassy eyes peering at me over the crib rail. Though I’m an experienced mom of five, a feeling of helplessness washes over me as if he were my first. Cold compresses and ibuprofen have little effect, so I sit down to snuggle with him.

My heart breaks a little as he whimpers in my arms and I ponder the strength of a mother’s heart to withstand these recurring tiny fractures. I pull him a little closer and lay a cool hand on his forehand to try to calm him. To my amazement, he quiets down immediately and falls soundly asleep. It’s then that I realize that a mother’s touch is often the best medicine of all.
