March 25, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski 14 Comments

m4mfMercedes from Common Sense With Money and I have cooked up a fabulous topic for Money4Moms tonight! We’re going to be giving you the straight talk on how you can earn a little bit of income off your blog.

In preparation for tonight’s show, I hope you’ll check out my previous post on blogging for income, and leave your comments and questions here.

I list all of my recommended affiliate companies in that post, but I wanted to highlight these four that can actually earn you cash just for signing up!

  • Logical Media ($25 sign up bonus!) – samples, coupons and more
  • Ebates ($5 cash or $10 GC sign up bonus!) – coupons, photo printing, shopping and more
  • Cashbaq ($5 sign up bonus!) – coupons, photo printing, shopping and more
  • Mr. Rebates ($5 sign up bonus!) – coupons, photo printing, shopping and more

So we hope you’ll join us on Money4Moms tonight at 10pm EST/9pm CST!

hi. I’ve seen these cash back companies before but am somewhat confused on hoe they work. I just bought something off ebay… Can I use one of these companies to pay for my purchase so save money..? I am such a newbie to all this – I would appreciate any help :)

I may just tune in tonight! I’m sure you get this question a lot – how much money can you realistically expect to earn monthly from your blog? I use several of the advertising affiliates you mention and I’ve had good experiences, but not a whole lot of cash flow. I guess it may come down to increasing traffic flow on my site. And, as you mention I’d prefer not to distract my readers with a whole lot of ads.

Also, seems big sponsors would be the way to go, and wondering if you all have any experience with major sponsors.

In any event, I just have a lot of fun with my blog and try not to take it too seriously. Just knowing I’m helping folks really makes a difference. BUT, if I can figure out how to make a few bucks on my blog I could stay home with my kids vs. working!

Thanks, and look forward to your call this evening!

Do you have tips for reinvesting in your blog once you start generating a few dollars? I am not sure if I should have a blog design done or if that should come down the road when people actually start reading my blog :) What are the most important things you recommend we invest in? Buying the domain and paying for hosting? Design? Advertising?

    Thank you.

    Hi

Thanks for the list of sites and tips. However, I have questions about sites like Local media, Ebates, and cashbaq. Those sites sound too good to be true to me and I’m wondering if they are scams? I mean, how do THEY make money? I really want to sign up for those sites, but may you give me feedback first? Like how do they send your rebate or whatever money you earn? And they won’t charge me anything right? Or know my information?

    Thanks for the help! =)

Mindy, I’ll go ahead and answer this one here. These companies get paid by the advertisers to have affiliates promote their products. All of the companies I’ve listed are legitimate companies that I have been paid by in a timely and regular manner.

I listened to your show last night and learned so much! Thank you! I had a few questions though, and hope this is the best place to ask them. My website has been running for about two months and I use blogger and have seen and heard of lots of bloggers starting there and then switching to wordpress when they get more traffic and start using affiliate companies. Would that be smart to do now? I’m going to be getting a site design revamp soon anyway, but wondered why serious bloggers seem to switch there. Also you said to make sure your domain isn’t taken before you start. My .com domain is taken, but i have the blogger and wordpress domains, should I change my name so I can have the .com domain or should I just keep it since i have the blogger and wordpress domains. O.k. sorry I know these are kind of lengthy questions for just a blog post, but I learned so much last night and am excited to put some of it to use. Thanks again!

Brooke, first of all, when you say you have the WordPress domain, that’s a WordPress.com name and is not the same as what I have. I have WordPress.org which requires you to pay for monthly hosting services and install the WordPress software on your server. WordPress has a lot more functionality regarding creating pages instead of just posts, and being self-hosted gives you more control over your site. However, making the switch from Blogger to WordPress is definitely not easy, so if it’s something you think you want to do, it’s best to do it sooner rather than later because it requires a lot of backend work to make your links work after importing your old posts.

Mercedes and I have both made the switch, so maybe this would be a good topic for a future show because it’s kind of involved, but this should give you a starting point to do some Google searches.

Thanks for your response! That makes more sense about the wordpress.org being different than wordpress.com, and I will definitely need to look into it. Thanks again, it really helps to have someone that has gone through this explain how it all works. Before yesterday when I read your blog and listened to your show I didn’t even know what affiliate companies were, and now I have signed up for a few of them, and understand advertising on my site that much more. I will definitely be tuning in next week!

Angela, you can still listen to the show either by visiting the Blog Talk Radio site, from the widget in my sidebar, or by downloading the podcast. Unfortunately, they don’t save a transcript of what’s discussed in the chatroom during the live show. There was some good info in there as well.

But definitely try to tune in next week. We’ll be covering ad networks and private ad sales!

Thanks for the list–that is a great idea (to post a list). I am surprised you don’t have Swag Bucks listed under rewards programs. It is one of my favorite programs since you can earn rewards without spending any money! Here is more information about it https://www.swapsavers.com/forum/topics/swag-bucks-code-22609
