Moms, Can You Relate?

February 28, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski 8 Comments

I recently had the honor of being chosen as one of four bloggers to participate in a special campaign sponsored by Vicks on Divine Caroline. This is the second in my collection of posts.

A Mother’s Touch

I don’t need a thermometer to tell me that my sweet baby boy has a raging fever. It’s evident from the flushed face and glassy eyes peering at me over the crib rail. Though I’m an experienced mom of five, a feeling of helplessness washes over me as if he were my first. Cold compresses and ibuprofen have little effect, so I sit down to snuggle with him.

My heart breaks a little as he whimpers in my arms and I ponder the strength of a mother’s heart to withstand these recurring tiny fractures. I pull him a little closer and lay a cool hand on his forehand to try to calm him. To my amazement, he quiets down immediately and falls soundly asleep. It’s then that I realize that a mother’s touch is often the best medicine of all.

Since ’tis the season, you might want to check out this valuable content about colds and flu – sponsored by Vicks, presented by DivineCaroline – including a chit chat where you can win $250!

P.S. I know several of you asked for my Mom’s Favorite Soothing Soup recipe from my last post, and I’m pleased to let you know that it can now be found on DivineCaroline!

That’s what I’m up doing at this very moment–so, yes, I can relate! Thanks for the reminder that even simple touch is an important job!

You may want to rethink your participation in this promotion, due to the results of a recent study.

Very true. My daughter just got very sick for the first time (she is 5 mos…got a stomach bug) and it helped them most to just be in Mommy’s arms.

Thanks for the link, Anonymous; however, there is no requirement on my behalf to actually use Vicks on my children. That said, I do use their products, but I use the baby formulation and follow the instructions on the container to just rub it on their chests.

Hi Debbie. Isn’t it cute? It’s from Flickr’s pool of videos that have sharing rights on them.

And Lisa, thanks so much for your comment. I don’t actually write very often, so I was a little apprehensive about publishing this one. It means a lot to me to know that you enjoyed it.

ANON (why can’t you post your name if you are so confident this stuff is bad for ya!) – If you read the ENTIRE article, it states it can cause breathing problems when applied DIRECTLY under the nose of someone under 2 years old. Personally, I’ve never used it this way and use it on the chest only. VICKS states it is NOT to be used directly under the nose and should not be used in children under 2 without recommendation of your doctor. So in fact, it is dangerous when people do not use as directed. So not sure how this even relates to Tara being involved in this promotion.

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
