Lala-Oopsies: A Sew Magical Tale DVD $9.96

March 29, 2013 by Tara Kuczykowski Leave a Comment

If you’re still on the hunt for a relatively inexpensive Easter basket item for a girl, then you may want to check out this adorable Lala-Oopsies: A Sew Magical Tale DVD. Exclusively at Walmart, it’s priced at $9.96 currently.

I had the opportunity to watch this sweet DVD with my youngest daughter today, and she loved it so much she watched it three more times before she had to leave for gymnastics practice.

A little about the movie:

Now, for the very first time, journey beyond the rolling green hills of Lalaoopsy Land to a magical place never seen before where you’ll meet the Lala-Oopsies! On islands that float on strawberry milk rivers, surrounded by tall mushroom trees, live the whimsical Lala-Oopsies princess ballerinas, fairies and mermaids. Join them as they embark on a fantastical journey to save their precious homes when the strawberry milk, which powers Lala-Oopsies Land, suddenly stops flowing.

One of my favorite aspects of the movie is the subtle encouragement for kids to read that’s included. The movie starts with a Lalaloopsy character selecting a book to read, which is the magical mermaid tale that ensues. Even the coordinating dolls that can be purchased have handles on the packaging which double as bookmarks once you trim them off after purchase.

As I mentioned, there is also a line of Lalaloopsy Oopsies mermaid dolls that coordinate with the DVD. Pictured above is cute and colorful Water Lily, one of the main characters of the DVD.

My daughter’s favorite feature is the the color change tail that changes with cold and warm water, while her little brother made off with the whimsical octopus sidekick, squirting water all over the bathroom. Boys will be boys!

All of the Lalaloopsy Oopsies mermaid dolls are also exclusive to Walmart currently.

Preorder The Bible Miniseries on DVD or Blu-Ray

March 17, 2013 by Tara Kuczykowski 10 Comments

Have you been watching The Bible miniseries on the History Channel for the past few weeks? If you haven’t heard about it, check out this short trailer for the series.

Basically, The Bible is a 10-hour, five-part, made for TV docudrama telling some of the best-known stories from the Bible. Five hours of the series focus on the Old Testament and five hours on the New Testament. While the series does not follow the Bible word for word, overall its intent was to retain the spirit of the written word.

We’ve been watching the series as a family since it started, and I have to say I’m so impressed with it so far. I’ll admit that we don’t go to church as often as I’d like, so this series has proved to be a great conversation starter and a way to really get my kids engaged in some of the stories from the Bible that they’re familiar with and some that they’re not.

But then I wouldn’t expect any less from the History Channel — we regularly tune into their programming.

If you missed the first few episodes or just want to own the miniseries in its entirety, you can preorder The Bible on DVD or Blu-ray starting at $29.99 right now exclusively on Walmart.com. Plus you’ll receive an exclusive first look at all of the episodes on Vudu, as well as early access to watching the miniseries in its entirety on April 2nd.

Don’t miss these companion books for the series:

  • A Story of God and All of Us: A Novel Based on the Epic TV Miniseries “The Bible”, $13.42
  • A Story of God and All of Us Reflections: 100 Daily Devotions Based on the Epic TV Miniseries “The Bible”, $10.75
  • A Story of God and All of Us Young Readers Edition, $11.40

Have you been watching The Bible miniseries? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!

Affordable Eyeglasses From Walmart Vision Center

February 27, 2013 by Tara Kuczykowski 11 Comments

I’m a little embarrassed to share with you that the last time I had my vision checked was when I was in college. I wore glasses and contacts in middle school and high school, but at some point I just stopped wearing them because my glasses were a horribly outdated style and I struggled with recurring eye infections from the contacts. My vision wasn’t that bad, so I’ve managed just fine until now.

Recently, however, Walmart asked if I’d be interested in trying out the Walmart Vision Center at my local store, and this was just the little nudge that I needed to make an appointment with an optometrist. Actually, I made appointments for both my husband and myself, as he was in pretty much the same situation.

We weren’t sure what to expect since neither of us have had our eyes checked in so many years, but the associate that greeted us put us right at ease. She was super friendly and helpful and remembered talking with me on the phone to setup our appointments, and I especially appreciated how great she was with my 5 year old who was along for the ride. She allowed him to observe all of my tests and to look at my eyes through the equipment, which he obviously thought was super cool.

My husband had been hoping for contacts, but as it turns out, for various reasons neither of us are very good candidates for contact lenses. We both opted to pick out a new set of frames from Walmart Vision Center’s large selection. With prices starting at just $9, I was totally impressed by how easy choosing an affordable yet stylish pair of glasses was. We were so surprised at checkout to find that my cute purple frames were just $18, and the silver wire frames my husband chose were just $9!

The prices for exams were equally affordable — $54 for an exam for glasses and $100 for an exam for contacts. Note that the price does vary slightly by location.

Because the exams and frames were so inexpensive, my husband and I were able to splurge a bit and add the antiglare coating to our lenses for $50 per set. And since we made our purchases at the same time, my husband’s frames and lenses were an additional 20% off! It will take about a week for our new glasses to come in, and we’re both really looking forward clearer vision.

If we had been good candidates for contact lenses, Walmart Vision Center carries some really affordable options for contacts as well, like these new Equate 1-day disposable contact lenses. At just $30 for a 30-day supply, these would have been a great easy care option that might have helped with the infections issue I experienced when I was younger.

Altogether, I would highly recommend the Walmart Vision Center for great customer service, convenience and affordability. We’ll definitely be taking the rest of the family over for a vision screening very soon!

Family Video Game Night with Just Dance 4 and Xbox Kinect

January 3, 2013 by Tara Kuczykowski 2 Comments

As my kids were unwrapping our family gift of a Wii U on Christmas morning, I was reminded of just how excited I was at age 7 to unwrap a new Atari 2600 from Santa. Which of course led to my next thought on how crazy far video games have come since then!

The rapid improvements in hardware and graphics over such a short period of time are pretty mind-blowing. And who would have ever thought that there would come a time when we didn’t even need an actual handheld controller to play a video game? I’m still amazed every time we turn on our Xbox 360 with Kinect and control a game via our voices, hand motions and gestures…

Family video game nights are still a regular occurrence in our household, though we typically hold them on Sunday evenings now instead of Friday nights due to sports schedules. We recently picked up a couple of new game titles courtesy of Walmart to expand our fun. The girls chose Just Dance 4, and the boys selected Madden NFL 2013.

I can’t tell you how much fun we’ve had playing Just Dance 4 as a family — the boys even jumped in. One of my favorite aspects of Just Dance 4 is that up to four people can play at a time. This means we can rotate through turns fairly quickly, and no one gets too bored while waiting for their chance to dance.

Many of the tracks are favorites of ours, and we’ve had a ton of laughs dancing to Call Me Maybe, What Makes You Beautiful and more. Oh, and the kids begged me to download Gangnam Style from the online store, and I have to admit I caved. Watching my 9-year-old trying to dance like PSY is priceless!

When we were all out of breath, the boys settled down to give Madden NFL 2013 a try. All I can say is, “Wow…” This is a far cry from the football game I had for my Atari! The graphics are nothing short of amazing, and even cooler, you can control the line of scrimmage via your voice with the Kinect.

There is so much packed into this game that we’ve barely scratched the surface as far as its capabilities go. We haven’t had a chance to try the Connected Careers feature, but from what I’ve read, I have no doubt that this game is going to keep my boys entertained for a very long time.

BTW, if you’ve had your eye on Madden NFL 13, I recommend buying the Walmart exclusive version so you get the Madden Ultimate Team!

Of course no family game night would be complete without snacks! I threw together this yummy Greek veggie crescent appetizer pizza, which didn’t last long with the appetites we all worked up. You can make it up to a day ahead of time, which leaves you free to play along with the rest of the family.

A few family video game night tips from my household:

  • Research games before buying. Walmart has launched a new resource that will provide video game education and tools for finding family-friendly gaming solutions. Just follow @GamerNetworkHQ on Twitter for real-time access to live gaming experts 24/7!
  • Parents should give games a trial run before game night. Many games have updates that need to be installed before you can play that can leave kids impatient for the activities to start!
  • Mix new games in with old favorites. Some games have a steep learning curve which can frustrate younger gamers. Rotate among games to keep everyone involved in the fun!

Do you host a regular family video game night? If so, what’s your favorite family-friendly video game?
