Guest Review: Angel Food Ministries

I’ve got a real treat for my readers today. Mandi from Doodles’ Place mentioned to me recently that she was picking up her first order from Angel Food Ministries, so I jumped on the opportunity and convinced to write a review on the service.

Be sure to check out all the cute and fun things she does with her three girls to “make the most of every moment” on her blog, and if you like what you see, subscribe to her RSS feed!

Ever since I first heard about Angel Food Ministries several years ago, I’ve been periodically checking their website for a local pick-up location so that I could participate.

This month, I finally had the opportunity to do just that thanks to a woman in our church who is organizing a local branch by driving to the closest one (which has been too far for me to make work) and then bringing all of the boxes back to a local pick-up point. Tara asked me if I’d be willing to write a review of the program to share with her readers here at Deal Seeking Mom, and of course I said yes!

First, if you’ve never heard of Angel Food Ministries, it’s a ministry that was founded to provide grocery assistance to families across the United States.

From their website:

Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month’s menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78.

One very important aspect of this program is that, unlike other ministries, participating does not mean that you are taking away money or food from someone else whose need may be greater. Rather, by participating, you actually enable them to purchase food at better prices, which benefits everyone.

This month, I decided to purchase the main unit as well as one of each of the additional boxes offered – a grill box, a stuffed chicken box, and a steak and meat combo, as well as a fresh produce box. My total was $106, and for that price I received everything in the attached PDF document.

Here are the pros and cons of this program, from my point of view.

  • It includes a lot of prepackaged, prepared foods. If you’re more of a cook-from-scratch kind of family, this ministry is probably not for you.
  • As I was pulling things out of the main box, it definitely exceeded my expectations as far as quantity and quality. I was very happy with that box and kept thinking, “Oh, I didn’t realize that’s what that meant.”
  • I was really worried about whether the food would survive the transport from the original pickup location to the place where I picked it up and then 40 minutes back to my house. But the meat is frozen and packed tightly in boxes, and it was still frozen solid. And even the frozen products in the main box made it. That was a huge relief to me when I started unpacking the boxes!
  • While we do eat a lot of chicken, we don’t eat red meat that often, so I’m expecting that the meat will last us at least three months.
  • Because you cannot control the variety (other than to choose to purchase it or not!), you must be willing to try new things to get the full value of the program. I actually consider this a benefit, as it is forcing us to try new things.
  • I’m admittedly very picky about produce. We eat a LOT of produce here (it’s probably one of the biggest components of my grocery budget, but I don’t do well with icky produce). I actually went to the grocery store on my way to pick up the boxes to get some peaches, bananas, grapes and blueberries because those are pretty much staples in our house right now. That said, the produce box was not up to my standards, and I don’t think I’ll be purchasing that box again in the future. There was nothing wrong with it, per se, but I prefer to pick out my own and probably would not have purchased a lot of what was in there if given the choice. Live and learn. (To be fair, though, the cantaloupe and honeydew was some of the best I’ve ever had!)

If you are currently on a very tight grocery budget, cook everything from scratch, combine coupons and store deals and shop multiple stores to get the very best deal, you probably won’t find these prices to be better than what you currently do. However, if – like me – you simply aren’t able to do those things (we live out in the boonies, and right now, our time is more important than getting the best deal), you may want to give it a try.

You can see September’s menu here, including their new “senior” box, which includes 10 pre-made single-serve meals. My husband is looking forward to these as lunches on the days he’s home and I’m working.

It sounds like a winner to me! My husband is bad about not packing his lunches some days (I know I should pack for him, but hey, he’s picky!) and ends up eating out, so I think the senior box would be great to have on hand.

Has anyone else tried Angel Food Ministries, and if so, what did you think?

Frugal Feeding Tips for Babies and Toddlers

August 26, 2008 by Tara Kuczykowski 42 Comments

When it comes to baby and toddler foods (among many others), manufacturers try to fool us into thinking that convenience trumps price. Don’t fall for this, ladies and gents! You can still totally have the convenience factor while saving some cash in the process.

In my first-ever vlog, I’m demonstrating with three different products just why you should pay attention to the price per oz. (or comparable measurement) on the “convenience” foods versus more traditional packages. Yes, I forced myself to be unfrugal all in the name of teaching my readers to save money! You can all thank me later . . .

So maybe those weren’t the most earth-shattering tips, but I’m willing to bet I have at least a few readers that are guilty of picking convenience over price without stopping to consider just what the bottom line is. Small savings like this can really add up!

And before I go, there’s one last thing I wanted to mention that I forgot to tell you all in the video – hey, this is harder than it looks! Anyhow, make sure to buy the fruit that’s packed in fruit juice. Babies are sweet enough without any extra added sugar!!!

So what are your best moneysaving tips on baby and toddler foods?

Frucall: Be A Smart Shopper!

July 23, 2008 by Tara Kuczykowski 22 Comments

I happened upon Frucall in a magazine about a month ago, and I wanted to try it a few times before sharing it with everyone. I’ve been very pleased with the site thus far, and while I’m especially excited to utilize it in my Christmas shopping, it’s going to be a fabulous shopping aid year round.

Using Frucall you can compare the prices on items you’re considering purchasing right there in the store utilizing one of three methods.

  • Call 1-888-DO-FRUCALL (1-888-363-7822), enter in the barcode, and their automated system will give you a list of the best prices found online.
  • Send a text message with the barcode to FRU11 (37811).
  • Enter the barcode on their mobile website at www.frucall.com/m.

All methods are free through Frucall, but obviously on your end you’ll want to be conscious of what kind of plan you have with your cell phone provider. I love that you can choose what works best for you!

Once you’ve checked the prices, they have a boatload of other great features. Frucall automatically bookmarks your searches so you can pull them up again at home. You can also have them send a message to your friends about an item. If you’re calling Frucall, you can record a voice message to save for later. And you can even purchase the item directly through Frucall if you find a great price online!

In addition to the shopping tools, you can also schedule reminders for special occasions and setup PriceAlert texts to be notified when the price on a particular item falls below a limit you specify.

Getting the best price always works for me, and Frucall makes it easy and convenient!

Make Your Own Clorox Anywhere Recipe

July 16, 2008 by Tara Kuczykowski 90 Comments

I fell in love with Clorox Anywhere a couple of years ago when I was part of a year-long test panel for it. I received free product coupons every month so that I could test it out and review it. It’s since become an indispensable part of my cleaning process, yet I just can’t bring myself to shell out $3.29 a bottle for something that is 99.9905% water!!!

I just used up the last bottle from my stockpile the other day, and I’ve really been missing it for all the little things I use it for. It occurred to me that I should just try to make my own, so after a little fancy math to convert the percentages of water and bleach to useful quantities, I came up with this simple recipe.

1 1/2 teaspoons of bleach

22 oz. water

How easy is that? I saved my pretty little Clorox Anywhere bottle to mix it in, but you could pick up any inexpensive spray bottle that holds just over 22 ounces to put it in.

My favorite use for it is to spray down the kitchen table and high chair after dinner. I let it sit to sanitize it while I clean up and load the dishwasher, and then I wipe it down with a dishrag. Letting it sit also helps “unstick” any sticky messes and makes for an easy cleanup all around!

Using Dollar/Cents Off Coupons to Score Free Items

June 15, 2008 by Tara Kuczykowski 12 Comments

Back when I was a novice couponer, I had NO idea that you could get items free using what I would call regular, everyday coupons, i.e., coupons that aren’t marked as getting the item free. Most stores will accept your dollar and cents off coupons on items that are less than the value of the coupon. This happens more frequently than you think if you use a coupon to buy a sample size item or if your store doubles coupons.

For example, you can purchase many Johnson’s sample size items with the $1 off coupons that they frequently have out and receive them for free. You do have to read the fine print on the coupons, because some specifically state the sizes that they’re valid on, but if it’s not stated, samples are fair game!

Better yet, many stores will apply the “overage,” the difference between the value of the coupon and the price of your item, to the balance of your transaction. I never count on this happening, as it can vary from store to store and even cashier to cashier, but it’s always a pleasant surprise when it does happen.

This doesn’t have to apply to just sample sizes. For example, a few weeks ago CVS had Excedrin 24-ct. bottles on sale for $1.99. I printed some $2 off coupons from online and was able to purchase them for free, and in this case the cashier did apply the one-cent difference from each to the rest of my transaction.

This little tip has saved me quite a bit since I learned it, so I love to pass the info on!!!
