I think the best way for me to get great food at a good price is to start watching for rebates well before the party date. I can combine rebates with sales and coupons to really get some killer deals. I just bought enough Pepsi 12-pks for 50 people for less than $10!!!

Potluck is the way to go for starters. Decorations can be kept to a minimum shopping dollar stores, or simply using napkins, paper products in the team colors. This year with the Saints as contenders, the inexpensive Mardi Gras beads can be used. As far as beverages, we always BYOB! We’ll provide ice, some mixers, drinks for kids, but adults bring their own. Go green & make pitchers of ice water instead of providing bottled (cheaper & no waste).

Save money by having everyone bring a side dish or chips! Also, I often find solid colored plates, napkins, cups after holidays (v-day, xmas, halloween, 4th of July) at 75%-90% off & I stock up!

We buy the food – bring your own cocktails. Snacky/finger foods seem to be the best for things like this.

Looks like everyone has the same idea . . . potluck is the way to go. Give guests a “category” of what to bring– from appetizers to drinks to dessert (so they don’t ALL bring brownies shaped like footballs). Prepare an inexpensive “main course” like chili and you’re good to go! No one is stuck holding a huge bill and everyone has a great time!

Often when I invite people for a meal or a party they ask if they can bring something. I almost always say “Yes!”. Especially if people want to (or at least offer) to contribute something it’s not a bother and it helps save money.
I also usually try to use as few disposable items as possible. It’s not hard for me to run the dishwasher and it’s rare that I have more people than I have cups or spoons, so that works out well.
At one party, I cut squares of cardboard and set out some permenant markers so that everyone could make their own coaster. It was fun, cost almost nothing, was a great way for people to keep track of their beverages and protected my furniture.
