This is definitely useful information to be aware of. If you’d like to print it off so you can carry it with you (as I always do!), here’s a direct link to the Walmart corporate coupon policy.
Walmart accepts the following types of coupons (see guidelines below):
- Manufacturer coupons (Cents Off)
- Free merchandise (or Buy-One-Get-One-Free) coupons
- Store coupons
- Pharmacy (Advertising and Promotional) coupons
- Internet coupons
- Soft drink container caps
The following are guidelines and limits:
- Walmart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase.
- Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates. Walmart will not accept expired coupons.
- Internet coupons should be legible and say “Manufacturer Coupon.” There should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and a scannable bar code.
- Only one coupon per item is permitted.
- Use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by Customer Service Manager.
Although it’s not explicitly stated here, in my experience, if your total savings are more than 50% off your total purchase price, your transaction will require approval by a Customer Service manager as well.

Danielle – On their website under the contact us link, you can leave a comment about your store experience. I Ieft a comment about the Gain Soap issue. The store manager contacted me within a few days. He apologized and told me to never leave his store unhappy again. He said he valued my business and assured me that I wouldn’t have any problems in the future. …I have only been there once since that incident…I’m really not a fan of Walmart…

I had a similar problem today at WalMart. I purchased a travel size Pert Shampoo for .97 and gave them a 1.00 coupon. The coupon did not state “except for trial size”. The cashier would not take it stating that I had to buy a larger size. I told her that the coupon did not state a size. she called another worker over and she told me the same thing. They used to adjust the amount of the coupon to what the item cost. That was all I was asking for. I especially did not like the attitude of the workers. I work at a bank and if we treated our customers like that, first of all we would not have many customers and second of all the bank wouldn’t keep me around very long. I have and will vary rarely shop at this WalMart again.
MELISSA
That’s weird…I also live in spring TX and used the same coupon to get gain dish soap free and it worked, I also got the rayovac batteries, dental floss and pert plus trial size, disposable razors, and sticky note pads for free. I used a lot of coupons and bought a lot of stuff so maybe they didn’t care enough to go through it all. That sucks. print out the walmart store coupon policy and carry it with you next time and asfar as the people waiting behind you they can just go to another line, you take time to shop for the best deal you should get it! all these deals do work.
MELISSA
FYI if you live in Texas, try using your coupons at HEB, I just got back and used most of the coupons I was going to use at Walmart. The prices were the same or just a couple of cents more, and they all worked with no hassle. Even when the product came out free. Reach dental floss for .95 plus 1.00 off coupon didn’t beep and didn’t need an over ride. Also the 1.00 off coupon for colgate adult or kid toothbrush worked on a kids two pack original price 1.89 came out to .89 for 2 brushes so I paid about .45 for each toothbrush. Good deal!

I am fuming I just left Walmart about 30 mins ago,I spent 2 hours shopping for the coupons I had. Now mind u I called walmart yesterday to make sure that they would accept my coupons I was told yes that is our policy, the only coupons we don’t accept are BOGO coupons. so I went to WM tonight after work, my total came to $135.00, I had a coupon for everthing I bought the cashier got $90 worth to go through when she had a problem and had to call a CSM, which we had to wait for 15 mins for her to even come because she was laughing and chit chatting with another employee,I actually had to go get her myself, when she finally came over she refused all of my coupons even the ones that had already scanned thru, telling me that those were competitor coupons and they don’t get paid for those, I told her that as advertised they do accept competitor coupons, she said she was not going to allow the coupons on the transaction and then proceeded to shove a coupon in my face and say see it is for another store only. I told her to keep it all and give me back all my coupons,as she tryed to slide one of my $10 coupons in her own pocket I told her that one too. I let her know that I will be calling the manager in the morning and I will be calling the regional manager as well, she told me so what I don’t care I let her know she should because I know the regional manager. I am so sick of Walmart, they don’t stand by their policy they don’t keep the store clean oh and don’t even try to go in hte middle of the night it’s a maze Your just lucky to get through the store without falling over something I am just waiting until 8 am and somebody is gonna hear my mouth I might just cause the BBB and the consumer affairs division on them oh yeah and the local news. I am telling Ken …. our news station here says don’t get mad tell Ken (consumer lawyer) I will go back and I will get all my stuff and use my coupons I promise I am not the one they want to play with. UGGGHHHHHH

Upon calling Wal Mart Corporate and asking about their store coupons on coupon policy, what it meant. This is what I was told “they were to be treated as a competitor ad”. They are supposed to be emailing me the information from corporate. We’ll see.
Sally
I just called our local Wal Mart today and spoke to the assistant manager aobut them honoring competitors coupons. She said if a coupon says it’s a Target coupon for $1 off, they will take it. They wont do BOGO or % off, but if it states a $ amount they will do it as long as it is a local competitor.
I also found out today that they will honor competitors ads for Black Friday.
TJ
Wal-Mart does not actually honor a competitors coupon. The do not get reimbursed for a competitors coupon. What they do is this: Say Walgreens has a in add coupon stating that their Halls cough drops are regularly $1.99 and they are on sale for $1.00 then they honor that “coupon” as a price match. If a Target coupon had $1.00 off then they will not accept it. Hope that helps..

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII HHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEE WWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL-MMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!! I’m so mad I can spit! Too mad to go into details but just a heads up…if you go shopping w/coupons the day the coupon expires please make sure you check out before midnight or they wont take them….even if you had been shopping for the last 2 hours.

This happened on 12/7/2010 I went to Wal Mart Located at 15220 Montfort Rd Dallas, TX
I had the following coupons:
Healthy Choice buy-1 get-1 free, Free any M&M candy, Free 24ct-20ct of Advil, Free Tub-Cottonelle Fresh Wipes
I was on my lunch hour. After the cashier rang up everything I handed her my coupons she just looked at me funny. Then she walked to another registered asked that cashier about these coupons they both looked at me weird. She then came back stated that Wal Mart doesn’t accept any of these coupons.
I was very angry by now; I stated to her I don’t see why not all of these coupons came from the manufacture that I received in the mail. She just looked at me with a dumb blank look on her face.
By this time I was furious, so I told her just give me back my coupons and you can keep your stuff, and I’ll go elsewhere. Keep in mind I hadn’t shop at any Wal Mart since the beginning of April of this year due to the fact they didn’t want to accept my coupons I printed from my house.
So, I thought I would give them another chance, and let me say they blew it big time……. I went back to my office, and called the store to speak with a manager was on hold 20 minutes hung up and called back. Waiting on hold for 2 minutes spoke with Assistant Manager Kawan, and explained to him what happen. Kawan stated to me that Wal Mart no longer accepts those coupons. He said he just transferred from out of state, so he asked another manager and both stated no they don’t accept them. Kawan said he has worked for Wal Mart for 17yrs and he has never heard of them accepting them where he transferred from.
Funny on Wal Mart’s web page it does state they do accept all of the coupons I had yesterday. I think that Corporate needs to educate all of their managers, and everyone else working for them.
I called today 12/8/210 and spoke with Gabriel a CSR and stated to her about my problem. She said she was sending my compliant to upper management. Wonder how long it will be before I here back for anyone?
I think to that Wal-Mart has gotten too big for their pants that they think they can do anything they want… I say anyone who has had a bad experience should boycott them at all cost. I mean come on Wal Mart is not the only store in town.
Sincerely,
Gena

I shop at a Walmart here in NRH, TX, and they always accept my coupons, no matter how much off- printed from home and manuf. even the “free” ones. I haven’t tried using Target coupons there though. Seems to me it must be a Walmart to Walmart thing. I usually use the self-checkout so I can keep an eye on what price rings up, because they are notorious for have things labeled one price, but it ringing up higher. I can’t keep an eye on it going through the reg. lines, so I always use self. Also, my printed ones always have issues scanning- but they always come over and just manually enter them in for me.

I live in southern Ga and love couponing. Just wanted to let people know my husband is a manager for Walmart. He came home telling me that Walmart is starting to only take coupons print in color off the internet due to coping or invalid coupons being used. You may need to check your store on this. Thought I would put this out there.
amy
l went to walmart here in Nashville on harding pike. I had all my coupons in hand and I gave them to the cashier. She made me pull out the products out of the cart and bags to prove that I had the correct items because the receipt did not say exactly what some of the products were, them I watched her throw away some of the coupons when they would not scan, when called out about it she said “you have saved plenty, you don’t need any more” I got real mad and she said that she did not have to take the coupons and was being nice because they were expire. I called the manager over and had her go through the coupons that she had to prove that they were all good. Then made her get the ones out of the trash and include them. She was rude and a lier. I will not be going back again.

Man I thought I was going crazy! I just had a horrible experience at Wal-Mart. I came home to google their coupon policy and came upon this page. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one! They are horrible! Maybe I was in the wrong. Some opinions would be helpful……………o.k so I got 2 bottles of Theraflu for 4.50 ea. I had a manufacturers coupon for $3 off 2 and I had a Publix coupon (competitor coupon) for $5 off 2 4.50
4.50=$9.00
-3(mf)=$6.00
-5(competitor)=$1.00
They said it was too many coupons and I couldn’t do it! They finally just did an override and gave me the deal to shut me up! The policy is”one coupon per item”. I was buying two items, I had two coupons. This worked fine at Publix, but couponing is a big thing in my area and my local Publix was out of stock on the Theraflu. I thought I would try walmart and boy was that a mistake! So was I wrong? Was that scenario against walmarts coupon policy???
Denise
Will they take a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon?
true
Was at Walmart in Concord NC on Monday.
I was informed by cashier, then the head cashier that they stopped taking any coupons but Manufacturer coupons a month ago. Store Manager was “not available” and customer service was packed so I walked out. I really don’t have time to argue with staff about corporate policy.
hardy
If you come through my line at my Wal-Mart I will take any coupon the register lets me (overide, manual enter w/e) as long as the coupon is valid. And if it says I have to get a CSM well it is then their call, sorry. As for competitor coupons, I’ll take those to, and if I get counseled for taking them I will just then do a price over ride for a price match. The policy is kind of unclear with very little guidance. This, in my opinion from my observations, is to give the store manager the ability to make his own individual policy on the issue for his store, as non manufacture coupons and price matches hurt the stores profits in turn lowers the employees profit shares ect. I don’t know if you have noticed but all Wal-Marts have different prices because the management team has the ability to decide what reasonable price to sell their products. And the whole Wal-Mart does not have coupons is true, but Sam’s Club does if you pay extra for an Advantage Plus membership, so that is probally why it is in there. Ultimately it is the luck of the draw, and if you find a cashier that hooks you up remember their name and look for them in your check out.
Kitty
There is no coupon out there that would “hurt” Walmart’s profits….
hardy
Also in our “training” from corporate we are told that we are not allowed to give money back from a coupon as no longer do many other store in my area. So, don’t expect to get paid to take something off the shelf lol.
Dia
Each store has to meet a profit goal, so it’s individual store profit that can be affected. Not the whole corporation’s profit. In return, if the store goes over that goal (happens majority of time) store employees receive a bonus check called “myshare” . She was only saying , that the reason some cashiers try to cheap you out of price matching/competitor coupons is to help increase their own bonus checks…
I’m really concerned about this forum, I just got into the world of coupons. This is discouraging! Hopefully I will have better luck.. and I’m really sorry to those who have had such bad experiences. I have to shop at walmart, because it’s the only grocery store around for awhile, lol!
Also, at our store our managers will pretty much give away money if you complain. Most customers who complain enough get not only whatever they wanted, but a gift card with various amounts (depending on the manager’s mood at the time) as well! lol
Walmart also changes policy all the time, employee’s are rarely informed unless some situation requires it. Even when it comes to rules on being late/calling in, they just assume we are all psychic.
michelle
I hardly shop at walmarts and tonight just reaffirmed to me why .
I went in to pick up birdseed since we are due another snow storm tomorrow. It is normally in the seasonal section of the store. Well the seasonal section had been turned into a clearance center! yah! I thought as I went through my coupons.. They had all kinds of splenda in there!! Bags of granular priced at $6.00, Granular white sugar blend were $2.98 and Brown sugar blend were $1.98. I bought two bags of each kind. I proceeded to check out and handed the cashier my stack of coupons. I had 5- $1.00 offs , 1- $2.00 off and 3- bogofree.
The cashier told me she could onlu except the dollar off copons OR the bogo coupons not both. Even when I said what about the one I am buying .. cant I use the $ off coupons with the bogo s? Nope one or the other. She then proceeded to show everything to the csm. The i was told she could only use ONE bogo coupon on the whole purchase of 6 bags because it said ” one per purchase!” Though I tried to explain that “EACH” bag is a “purchase ” and all together would be a transaction.. didnt work. So I had her VOID the entire order and split it up into 3 orders. Two $6.00 bags , two $2.98 bags and two $1.98 bags … I was tyold I could not do that either . I ended up paying for a $6.00 bag and getting a $2.98 ba free BECAUSE the coupon stated “up to $3.99!!! She would NOT take off the $3.99 for any reason. So what I figured should have cost $8.97 in total ($6. + $2.01 + $2.98 + $1.98 – $2.00 Q – Two – $1.00 off Q’s) instead cost $13.98 ( $6. + $6. + $1.98 – two -$2.98 bags were free)
I am going to call corp. tomorrow following up with an email to both corp and the store manager. I think I will skip shopping at . I will post my reply when i get one …

i’ve used competitors in-store coupons in the past, with no hassles. i have even received flyers that state they accept competitors coupons.
today i went to walmart to make a purchase and was told that walmart does not accept competitor’s in-store coupons, only their ads. the clerk brought a manager over, who re-iterated this to me. after debating for a few moments about their inconsistency, i politely told the manager, “that’s fine, i will use the coupon at the competitor’s store, then” and with that, i turned and walked out, leaving her and the clerk with the MANY rang up and bagged items to re-stock. problem solved….
you would think someone in a management position would understand the ramifications of telling a customer they wont take the coupon, AFTER they’ve already rang up and bagged everything else? ;)
Cari
Cindy, I can tell just by your attitude that you work at WalMart. Almost EVERY employee at WalMart is RUDE & hardly ever smiles. I understand you hate your job, but do you really expect a CUSTOMER to spill syrup and whip out a freaking mop and clean it up?! Accidents happen and there are people who work there to clean it up. Geeze.
Cindy
What I expect is for the customer to do the RESPONSIBLE thing and let someone know they have made a mess. If you come into my home and make a mess, or if your children make a mess, I hope you would ask where the paper towels are and clean up the mess
B From Montucket
Cindy its not there responsibility to get a paper towel period i know the policy the right thing to do is just let someone know what happened.. if you dont like your job find some where else to work
Kathie
Cari just so yo know not all Walmart employees are rude! I work there I am NOT rude I always smile and I make it a point to talk to everyone. Also yes if you make a mess I would at least expect you to offer to clean it up no matter what it is. Its just common courtesy. If I am out shopping I clean my messes if my children or I happen to spill something cuz well…I’m not lazy.
Jackie
Cari, not all Walmart employees are rude. I work there only because there are no other jobs in Northern KY. I’m not rude but I can agree with Cindy, a lot of people that come into Walmart are have no consideration. People have dropped their soda’s and just walk away. At least they could do is ask if we have paper towel so they could clean up after themselves. The people that work at Walmart are treated like second class citizens. The people that shop at Walmart should be more considerate toward the people that have to work at WalMart for one day they may be working at Walmart and getting abused.
Megan
my personal opinon is all of you are right and wrong. yes walmart workers do get treated wrong, and ppl should pick up after themselves. on the other hand though every one has been treated bad in life. im a pizza hut worker and some time i get treated bad, but thats part of life. things happen. i honestly think ppl need to vent when their mad. so cindy has that right, but she also has got to understand that ppl suck. there is no changing the world and sometimes you just got to deal.
Stacey
i have scanned over several complaints and i just want to add one thing (as i work at walmart/have been a cashier in the past). BEFORE you get in line, grab items that you think may be causing you trouble. FIND the highest manager on the floor (or just a CSM if this is all you can get) and pull them aside and ask them.
if you get a CSM at the register, and she says, ‘no’, and you say, ‘Well George said it was okay’ she’ll call him, verify (george being HER manager), and has nothing left to say. usually the higher managers don’t know the rules themselves, but if they say they’ll accept the coupon, address or not, it will get taken.
walmart it just so big/so disorganized it’s become a mess. Sam Walton is staring down on his sons and frowning, as his children destroy/drag his dream into the ground…another Paris HIlton story..
Kathy
New to couponing … only 3 weeks in … and so frustrated with Walmart … have printed out the coupon policy and carry it with me always to Walmart … it says that it accepts Store Coupons … tonight I took several Publix coupons that were cut from the back of their sale flyer today to redeem … but the manager would not accept them saying they couldn’t take them because it didn’t have a bar code on it. The coupon policy mentioned nothing about that … I told him corporate needs to make that clear on their policy … heard him tell the cashier that I was right … needless to say I did not make a purchase at Walmart tonight … I went across the street to Publix and did my shopping … so confused?
Patricia
I had a good experience last week with walmart and coupons I just had to share! I purchased 4 packages of gain fabric softener (40 sheets) @$1.89 each and 4 combo packages of garnier fructis (2-8.5 oz) @$2.47 each combo. I had 4-$3 off coupons for gain and 4-$1 off coupon for the shampoo. My total before tax was $3.79. During the check out process the register did not want to take my coupons for the gain because the coupons value was more than the product. However the cashier looked at the coupons and saw that i purchased exactly what was on them and gave me my savings with out any hassle. Unlike other stores who only give the value of the item which I’m confused about because when they turn the coupons back in they get the value of the coupon regardless of the savings the customer actually got. I did notice that when I use coupons at walmart for free item that the cashier does not put in the price paid but the max amount is written in on the coupon by the cashier and then only gives the amount paid to the customer. I have addressed this with the cashier and was eventually given what the cashier put on the coupon.
John
Hello all,
I have an interesting story. For MONTHS my wife and I have been going to Wal-Mart for the savings, and my wife has become an avid “coupon shopper.” Last night when she was checking out, she was told she could only use 1 coupon per item. We have never had this issue before. She was told it is store policy. So I called the corporate location and voiced my concern. I was told per their policy that was correct. Has anyone else run into this? As I told the person on the phone, their policy contradicts it self two lines below:” Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.” As you can see in this line it states that “Coupons” may exceed the price of the “Item.” They had no response. Looking for a little help/feedback, or we are going to use Wal-Mart less…..
Tara Kuczykowski
John, you may only use one manufacturer’s coupon per item as a rule. That has nothing to do with store policy — it’s stated in the terms of all coupons.
John
Tara,
For clarification, we generally use a P&G coupon, printed Manufacturer’s coupon, and maybe one from local paper. Not trying to copy coupns or print multiple of same coupon. Rarely do we have more than one coupon per item.
As for your reply, one coupon per item is not stated on ALL coupons. For instance if you get today’s Sunday paper, reference the Smart Source coupon book. Farmland Smoked Sausage does NOT anywhere on the coupon say limit one coupon per item or purchase.
If the coupon states that, then yes obviously one coupon, but why can you not use 2 coupons for same product, if both are manufacturer’s coupons but do not have stipulation or are for same product, diff. savings value etc.?
Tara Kuczykowski
I did not receive the coupon you referenced in my insert, so I can’t verify the terms, but it’s a general rule that you may only use one manufacturer’s coupon per item. You may also use one store coupon if available. Manufacturers verify the stock sold by a store versus the number of coupons used, and they will not honor payment on anything above what is actually sold.
John
Tara,
I can tell you in my local paper there is a Farmland coupon for which has no stuipulation to it. This coupon is in the Smart Source Magazine that came with the Sunday paper here in Wisconsin. I will quote the fine print for you… CONSUMER: Use only to purchase the product(s) specified. Void if transferred or reproduced. You pay sales tax. Any other use constitutes fraud. Retailer: Send coupon to Farmlands Foods…. etc.
Nowhere on the coupon does it say limit one coupon per package/purchase. Oh well, guess I call a couple manufacturer’s for clarification to ensure I am not doing something wrong…. Thank you for your response.
So, why could I not use multiple??
Lisa
John, You can use one coupon per item and if the coupon amount exceeds the priced amount, you will received cash back. There is no limit to how many items and coupons you can use this on – just as long as it is 1 coupon per 1 item. Hope that helps.

Jessica
You can use 1 coupon for item, it’s not 1 coupon per purchase.
Kellie
Jessica,
Each individual item is considered a purchase. It doesn’t matter if you are getting 1 or 50 items together they are a complete transaction.
John,
Quick Stacking tips:
To be able to use 2 coupons on 1 single item one of those coupons must be a store coupon that does not have MFR on it and then stack it with a coupon that came out of an insert that is a MFR coupon. Just so you know Wal-Mart will not take any other store coupon that does not have MFR on it. So you cant stack at all at Wal-Mart. Now even if you have 2 MFR coupons that say completely different things it is still only ever 1 MFR coupon per item(each item is a purchase). I know it doesn’t always seem like it should work that way with the wording on the coupons but the store only gets paid for 1 coupon per purchase/item.

How is everyone doing using the NEW Walmart coupon policy? Have you used a Catalina yet? Cindy, do you know what a Catalina is? Just need some feedback?
Cindy
No, I don’t know what a Catalina is. Sorry
Nancy
A Catalina is a coupon that is printed out at the register when you make a purchase.
Loria
Used 2 catalinas at Walmart yesterday. They did not want to accept them because they had a Food Lion logo on them. I repeated their own coupon policy back to them; the coupons each said “Manufacturer’s Coupon” and had bar codes. Had to call a manager over, and a little reluctantly he accepted them. A little frustrating!
Kellie
I did today. I got a Catalina that had MFR Coupon on it from Ingles and Wal-mart took it just fine. I did not scan so they just entered it as a vendor coupon. I don’t care how they enter it as long as I got my $4 off. On to of that I also had them price match it to Bilo’s price for the same item before coupon. I ended up getting a large pk of bath tissue for $0.99 today.
Susie Payton
You work at WALMART, right?
Cindy
Yes, I do. But I don’t know what a Catalina is. Help me out.
Emily
wow you guys need to stop whining and get lives. .seriously. how old are you all? 14?
Jean
I went to WalMart last night with my copy of the new coupon policy. The clerk would not accept the RR catalina from Walgreens. Two customer service reps and a manager later, they finally accepted my RRs based on my printout of the coupon policy. Total time in checkout was more than half an hour. The manager callled me that evening saying that I was correct about the new policy and that they would be happy to accept RRs. My neighbor went in this morning, and they declined her RRs. Three customer service reps and the same manager later, she was told the new coupon policy did include RRs, but that they could not accept them until they were told by corporate where to send the coupons. Total time 45 minutes. So, maybe, sometime in the future they may accept RRs. Next time I have 30-45 minutes to spare I may try again.
Susie Payton
Emily, apparently you don’t like discussions that result in money in the pocket. It is okay if you leave, we won’t notice.
Jean, doesn’t the RR have an address to send the coupons to? Mine are all in the car, so I can’t check right now.
Cindy, check the newest WM coupon policy. Therein is your Catalina information.
