Walmart Corporate Coupon Policy

June 15, 2008 by Tara Kuczykowski 346 Comments

This is definitely useful information to be aware of. If you’d like to print it off so you can carry it with you (as I always do!), here’s a direct link to the Walmart corporate coupon policy.

Walmart accepts the following types of coupons (see guidelines below):

  • Manufacturer coupons (Cents Off)
  • Free merchandise (or Buy-One-Get-One-Free) coupons
  • Store coupons
  • Pharmacy (Advertising and Promotional) coupons
  • Internet coupons
  • Soft drink container caps

The following are guidelines and limits:

  • Walmart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase.
  • Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates. Walmart will not accept expired coupons.
  • Internet coupons should be legible and say “Manufacturer Coupon.” There should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and a scannable bar code.
  • Only one coupon per item is permitted.
  • Use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by Customer Service Manager.

Although it’s not explicitly stated here, in my experience, if your total savings are more than 50% off your total purchase price, your transaction will require approval by a Customer Service manager as well.

This is the umpteenth time I have had issues redeeming a coupon at Wal-Mart. Today I had a coupon for a 10 oz bottle of GAIN dishwashing soap – a whopping value of 97 CENTS! The cashier told me they “only accept buy one get one free coupons” and that they “just can’t give stuff away for free”. I told her to please double check with her manager – the manager came over and said…. get this…. “we do NOT accept MANUFACTURER’S COUPONS because we do NOT get REIMBURSED for them”. OMG – Are you SERIOUS? There were people waiting in line behind me so I gave up – not worth 97 cents to piss off a bunch of innocent shoppers – otherwise I would have stood there all night arguing with these knuckleheads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is store 0849 in Spring, Texas – OP #117 – TR #05217. In case you work @ Wal-Mart you will see the last item on this receipt is MINUS 97 CENTS for the GAIN soap – I will just use the coupon at KROGER! They happily accept ALL my coupons! :o)

Hi, can someone please clarify something for me? If I have a B1G1 coupon for BIC razors, can I also use a $2 off coupon for BIC razors, since I’m technically buying two BIC razors? Thanks.

Some times they will sometimes most the time they except the two dollar coupon off one razor and when you buy not the freeone Other places you can use the buy one get one free coupon and then use two dollars Off razor in two dollars off the other razor Or say you hava store scenario where it’s buy one get one free you don’t have a coupon you can use two coupons because you have two items and 2 coupons The number of items has to match up with the number of coupons Any more questions feel free to ask. I know quite a bit And their policy says only one coupon per item that’s not true they stack coupons with store competitors

The B1G1 coupon is for the one you get free. Use the $2 off coupon ofr the one you purchase to get the one free.

As of today I will no longer shop at walmart! Not ever! Ill drive a few blocks to albertsons, walgreens, or target, which are all within 10 blocks my the walmart where I live.

A couple weeks back I noticed new signs up at the registers that clearly stated they price match any itentical item AND they take competitor store coupons! I got so excited bc now I didn’t have to go place to place…. boy was I disapointed! Also.. In the corp. Policy clearly states they take store coupons. I brought my coupons in and not only did the casier not have a clue how to take coupons at all, she told me the coupons were for a different store.. Um yeah that’s bc walmart takes them now lady! I pointed out there is a sign right at her register that says “WE ACCEPT COMPETITORS STORE COUPONS!” she had to get a manager over. He had her price match the items to make them the correct price… then on the last item, she couldn’t figure out how to do it, bc the item was 98 cents and coupon was $1 off… the cashier at this point was just as stressed as me at this point, and the now second manager came over very rudely and said “we AREN’T supposed to take these coupons! Oh boy is (john or whatever name she said) going to have fun with this!” she was very rude to the cashier, who by this time (20 mins into the ordeal) I felt sorry for. She was even ruder to me and told me I didn’t know the rules….

The very same thing happened to me today! It’s so frustrating!!! It was clearly stated in the ad, but even the manager wouldn’t accept them because there was not an address to mail the Target coupons to. Surely this billion dollar company did their research before printing this policy all over the store!!!

    Hey Cindy,

You are as typical as a Walmart employee can be. I read through these posts and on July 21, you state “Hey, I’m back! Go to the link shown above. It does say store coupons (new to me)”, then you go on to explain in depth why couponers can’t use FRAUDULENT coupons. No where on here did any one suggest that they wanted to use fraudulent coupons, and then you explain away something else, check policy, call someone and it is clear to all of us that nothing at all is clear to you about your employers’ coupon policy.
Then you agree to one of the posts by proclaiming ” Praise God! Someone who finally understands!” OMG ! OMG OMG! No you just didn’t (at this point I have gone ghetto on you, my manners have dissipated and surliness has set in) YOU JUST CONTRADICTED EVERYTHING YOU SAID in the posts. Confirming first that Walmart accepts competitors coupon and the refusing to take them Confused? yes you are and so is most of your co-workers.
As a fair and saavy couponer, I nor anyone else that cares about ever using a coupon again would purposely use a Doritoes, Folger or other fraud coupon. We love this frugal lifestyle too much to ruin it. But then there is always that percentage of those that used them when they knew it was wrong and there were a few of my friends that didn’t know they were fraud until after I or someone else told them. They have now taken my class and we promise to stay out of Walmart—all 1500 of us. Keep aggravating the coupon queens and see how that works out for ya. All caty and snide remarks are my own because Walmart does not own me.

When I speak of fraudulent coupons I am talking about those customers who do try to use them and when you tell them they are fraudulent they say something stupid like “well I got them off the internet”!!! When you explain to them that regardless of where they came from they are still fraudulent and cannot be accepted they act like you’re accusing them of making them up. We get all kinds of customers in our stores and all stores are alike in that respect. We have had customers spit on us, hit us, throw things at us cuss at us and all kinds of things that you would not believe. These are things that might never happen in your place of work. We’ve had people run over us with riding carts, spill gallon sized containers of pancake syrup on the floor and leave it for others to clean up. I’ve cleaned piss off the floor and and even had to “babysit” an even nastier mess on the floor to keep people from slipping in it. Believe me lady – telling someone their coupon is no good is the easiest thing I’ll do during my shift. Go to the policy and read it for yourself. “Store coupon” means a Walmart store coupon (sales paper) not Walgreen’s, CVS, etc.

Walmart does not have in-ad coupons. I was sent this by Walmart corporate:

Walmart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase. Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates. Walmart will not accept expired coupons or double/triple coupons. Internet coupons should be legible and say “Manufacturer Coupon_ and there should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and scannable bar code. Store Coupons must reflect a specific sale price or original price and must be available to all customers. For ‘Free’ merchandise coupons, customers will not receive cash back — the cashier will adjust the value of the coupon to the actual retail of the item at the time of sale. In addition, only one coupon per item is permitted and use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by a Customer Service Manager.

    Cindy,
Why have we have been treated to the pitfalls of being a WM employee? Does what you go through everyday on the job with various customers reflect in any way how you will treat me when it is my turn to check out? Was that explanation your attempt to justify not understanding the coupon policy because you are war torn every single second of your shift? We are NOT discussing the workplace here, nor are we interested. The topic is the “grayness” of the coupon policy and the gross and obvious disregard of any employee being able to understand it. In this post you explain the stores coupon policy means Walmart coupons. Again you fall on your face, there are NO WALMART coupons, in any store, website or ad. So again, the policy is deemed LAME. If you feel so inclined to respond, please stay on topic. ~~~Susan

I don’t misunderstand the policy and I don’t treat all customers the same; I treat each one as an individual. I will politely refuse any coupon that does not meet the policy. You’re right – WalMart does not have store coupons but it does state that in their policy. I have been advised not to except any other stores’ coupons.

I used to work @ walmart, and trust me, most walmarts will take darn near any coupon/voucher/return you can throw @ them. I use a large stack of coupons every 2 weeks when I go shopping, and if they won’t scan, the cashier puts them in manually, and it that doesn’t work, they override the computer. They are meticulous about putting all of the correct coupons in, and making sure it was taken off of my total. I go to walmart when marsh doesn’t accept my formula coupons (often). and do 90+% of my shopping @ walmart b/c they are so cool about coupons and matching other store’s prices and such.

Wow Megan, you seem to be one of the lucky ones. I refuse to shop at Walmart, because it is not worth the trouble. I have had problem after problem, and even after contacting the corporate office things still did not change. The managers as well as the associates at the store in my town HATE coupons. They make up thier own policies and play dumb when you ask them why they are not follwoing the corporate policy. I am not saying it is this way at all Walmart stores, however at the store where I live it is terrible. I simply take my business elsewhere, and reccomend that others do the same.

No problems with our Walmarts. I always look for a younger cashier. They stare at coupons and reply “what are these?” I explain blah, blah, blah. Then I wait til they hit the total button. “WOW those make a huge difference in your total.” I smile and say “YUP, just a few extra dollars to spend on our next vacation. ”
Thanks Walmart for making couponing so much fun!

I really don’t get coupons. I think i try to stack correctly and always get refused. I had a huggies coupon for a free bag. I did the huggies rewards codes and got my free bag. Then I bought another bag along with it so I could use my 3.50 off 2 bags. They wouldn’t let me use both. Actually the computer at walmart scanned both through just fine and she let me at first. but then she freaked out as I was paying and manually took of the 3.50 and said she would have gotten in trouble. ( very unprofessional to accept and then deny for starters) but why can’t I use both??

Well seeing as how you guys have all been having problems, it sounds like Wal-Mart DID change some of its policies without letting anyone know. They need to alert the media. Otherwise, that’s pretty sneaky! SInce Wal-mart has been in the news for so many scandals (Remember when they endorsed a controversial political canidate, how they sold toys from China, and how they pay people overseas just PENNIES a day for their hard work?) then I guess I’ll just go there mostly to buy in bulk. Otherwise, its only a very occassional trip to Wal-Mart. Too bad. I was about to make it my new favorite store after reading coupon mom.

Did the Gain Dish Liquid coupon work for anyone? I tried it last night and the cashier said it was not the right item. I stated that the coupon does not have a size restriction. She called the manager over and she read it and said “no” too. I don’t normally shop at Walmart because it isn’t worth the hassle. Since my family is visiting, I decided to try out a few deals. All the other coupons worked except this one.

Walmart rejected my $1.00 off coupon because the price of gain was only $0.97. Is that there policy not to except coupons for more than the amont of the item being purchased? I found the Gain at the NEX for $1.50, so I got the large for only $.50.

      TyC and anyone else,
I order coupons off of “thecouponclippers.com” because I buy a large… amount of groceries and it’s cheaper than buying bunches of newspapers only to be disappointed when all of the coupons that you really need is not there. This way you can order what you want, and how many you want very inexpensively. This website is great! Even if you are buying a small amount of groceries you’ll get all your money back in what you save, I PROMISE!! Just counting the last 3 months alone I have spent $300-350 in all groceries (except fresh meats but including dog food and treats for 2 pitbulls over 60lbs each and a toy chihuahua) and all household items and saved well over $2000 using coupons. This is not just shopping for the month, it’s shopping for 6 months or more, buying in bulk.

My Wal-Mart on SFL, to be precise – Coral Springs, Florida, said last week that they no longer accept internet coupons! Depending on what cashier I got, I usually always had a hard time using coupons there. So I will take my business to Target and Publix. They have NEVER questioned an internet coupon, and have always been a pleasure to do business with.

Well, I had a terrible experience at Walmart last night. I have not shopped there in almost a year because of my last experience and thought I would give it 1 more chance because they had some good prices and I had some good coupons. Well, no go. When I got to the register and handed over my coupons, some printed from the internet and some from the newspaper, she immediately called over her line manager and started whispering in her ear. Right away I knew there were going to be problems. So, i waited patiently, while looking at my husband who could see the steam coming and he said, uh oh, hear we go. They both came back and said that they don’t take these kinds of coupons because they don’t get paid for them. I said, you have got to be kidding me. 2 Q’s were straight from the Lysol website. 2 Q’s were straight from El Monterrey website. There were others as well that I had that came straight from the products website and they still would not take them, claimed that they do not get paid for them. I asked them, so you don’t take any printable coupons because you claim that you don’t get paid for any of them? They said that they only take Smart Source coupons, they are the only ones that pay us. I live in Michigan by the way, but I can tell you I will never ever go back to Walmart again. I purchased a few things that I had to have because I didn’t have time to go to another store, but I made them take probably 85% of the things off and if I could have just walked away I would have. I am going to call Walmarts Customer Service # and report my trip and see exactly what they have to say. What a wasted trip. I have never had any problems with my printable coupons at any other store, EVER. And I just want to say Thank You to everyone who posts the great deals that they find and to Tara for her wonderful work on her site.
