Many of you have probably already heard of $5 Dinners, the blog written by my good bloggy friend, Erin Chase, that shares healthy, delicious, and affordable meals. And by “affordable,” I mean ultra-frugal — every recipe can feed a family for $5 or less!
If you’re already a fan of Erin’s or are now intrigued and interested to find out how you can prepare meals in your own home for $5 and under, you’ll be thrilled to find out that she recently published her own cookbook, The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook.

Some of my favorite inexpensive meals are grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, cracker-crusted baked chicken with green beans, and stir fry (in which I actually steam the veggies instead of frying in oil and use a marinade for the meat instead of oil, and of course brown rice instead of white :) ).
Balancing budgets and eating healthy work really well together when you can save so much money by using coupons and preparing your list ahead of time (and even your menu plan if you are super organized.
I was amazed when I started doing “defense” for our family – making our money spread further – how much I could get at the grocery store. The money I save on staple items leaves room for the items that are healthy (b/c unfortunately, healthy items tend to be more expensive…). Also, preparing more meals at home vs. eating out has always been how we roll around here. That plays a huge part in a healthy lifestyle b/c you have more control of what is in your meal.
I hope I win – I have a copy already, but would love to pass another copy on. I love $5 dinners! :)

Sausage Casserole, Chicken Fettuccini, Lasagna…are all pretty cheap meals for us. I shop at Winco, which is an employee owned store so prices are cheaper and buy their store brand, which isn’t any different from the name brands for less money!

A great CHEAP dinner for a cold winter night is smoked sausage, buttered noodles and cabbage. My family loves it
