Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

Child Passenger Safety Week is September 19-25 this year, and it is a great time to check over your current safety seat situation and make sure your kids are secure and plan for what you will need as your children grow. With many parents not knowing the laws or the guidelines for when to move their children between rear-facing safety seats and convertible seats to booster seats and beyond, this is definitely a topic worth paying attention too and reading up on.
Research done by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has shown that risk of injury to children is reduced by 60% when a belt-positioning booster seat is used rather than seat belts alone. For instance, in my state of Ohio, as of last year, 1/6/09, the law states that children between 4 and 8 years of age need to be secured in a booster seat. This is to protect children in the case of an accident who are not yet as large as an adult, but who have outgrown their car seat.
A few features of the Chicco KeyFit Strada Booster Seat:
- Easy to install and use.
- Height and width are adjustable with one hand
- Fabric cover is removable and machine washable
- Converts to backless booster for children 40 lbs – 100 lbs
- “EPS” Energy Absorbing Foam provides enhanced impact protection
- Triple side protection: head, shoulders and lumbar
- Deep side wings support child’s head and neck while napping

If the child is eight years old and is under 4’9″ tall or weighs less than 100 lbs, it is recommended that you continue to use a booster system. I have a 3 year old, 17 month year and pregnant with my 3rd in December. And honestly trying to figuring out the carseat situation now-but it’s all so confusing. So we will definitely need this- thanks for the giveaway!!

CT law says children must ride in a proper child restraint until they are over 6 years of age AND 60 pounds! (Both the age and weight requirements must be met)
Erin
SC law – Children 1 through 5 years old weighing 40 to 80 pounds must be secured in a belt-positioning booster seat. Children under the age of 6 are not required to be in booster seats if they weigh more than 80 pounds or if they can sit with their backs against the car’s seat and bend their legs over the seat edge without slouching.

In Maryland: Every child under 8 years old must ride in an appropriate child restraint (includes car seats, booster seats, or other federally approved safety devices) unless the child is 4 feet, 9 inches or taller, or weighs more than 65 pounds.

Florida law requires children under 5 years of age to be properly restrained no matter where they are seated in the vehicle. Children through age 3 must be secured in a separate carrier (child safety seat) or in a vehicle manufacturer’s integrated child safety seat. For children ages 4 – 5, a separate carrier, an integrated child safety seat, or a safety belt may be used. If a safety belt does not fit the child correctly, a booster set should be used to correctly position the lap and shoulder belts once they outgrow forward facing child safety seats (generally at about 40 pounds and 4 years old). Children from approximately 40-80 pounds and under 4’9″ in height should ride in a booster seat.
Infants must ride rear-facing until they are at least one year old and weigh 20 pounds or more. Rear-facing, the infant should be semi-upright at an angle or no more than 45 degrees. A forward-facing older child should ride sitting upright.

NC law is under 8 years old and 80 pounds for a booster seat. I really need a second car seat b/c my baby is about to outgrow her infant seat. I could let my 4 year old use this one and give her his current one. Hope I win!

In Virginia child restraint devices are required for children through the age of seven (until 8th birthday). There is no height or weight requirement associated with this law. The Virginia law is based solely on age.

Pennsylvania state law requires that children under age 4 ride in a federally approved car seat ot booster that is appropriate for the child’s age, height and weight. Children ages 4 to 8 must use a booster seat if they are no longer in a car seat. Pennsylvania law further requires that children ages 8 to 18 use a seatbelt whenever they are in a vehicle, regardless of seating position. My daughter is almost four, I really need a booster!!

Restraint Required:
For North Carolina» A properly used child restraint device (CRD) is required if the child is less than 8 years old AND weighs less than 80 pounds. Most parents and other care givers will be able to comply by using belt-positioning booster seats for children between 40 and 80 pounds. The child must be within the weight range for the child restraint/booster seat and it must meet Federal standards in effect at time of manufacture

OHIO: children less than 8 years old, unless they are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall must use a booster seat. ( New guidelines effective October 2009)

The laws in my state require children to meet weight/height requirements and age requirements although I’m not sure what the specifics are.

In Texas, the law just changed this year to encompass children longer. Children must be in a booster until they are 8 years old or 4’9.
