Win-It Wednesday: Chicco KeyFit Strada Booster Seat!

September 8, 2010 by Tara Kuczykowski

Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

Child Passenger Safety Week is September 19-25 this year, and it is a great time to check over your current safety seat situation and make sure your kids are secure and plan for what you will need as your children grow. With many parents not knowing the laws or the guidelines for when to move their children between rear-facing safety seats and convertible seats to booster seats and beyond, this is definitely a topic worth paying attention too and reading up on.

Research done by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has shown that risk of injury to children is reduced by 60% when a belt-positioning booster seat is used rather than seat belts alone. For instance, in my state of Ohio, as of last year, 1/6/09, the law states that children between 4 and 8 years of age need to be secured in a booster seat. This is to protect children in the case of an accident who are not yet as large as an adult, but who have outgrown their car seat.

A few features of the Chicco KeyFit Strada Booster Seat:

  • Easy to install and use.
  • Height and width are adjustable with one hand
  • Fabric cover is removable and machine washable
  • Converts to backless booster for children 40 lbs – 100 lbs
  • “EPS” Energy Absorbing Foam provides enhanced impact protection
  • Triple side protection: head, shoulders and lumbar
  • Deep side wings support child’s head and neck while napping

One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a Chicco KeyFit Strada Booster Seat!

To enter, tell me how long a child needs to be in a booster seat in your state. Is it six years old, seven, eight? Do they need to be both an age and a weight before moving out of a booster seat?

Would love to win this. My three year old is ready to move up to a booster seat. North Dakota state law requires that children under age 7 ride in a car seat or booster seat. The car seat or booster seat must be installed and used according to manufacturer’s instructions. A seat belt may be used if the child is over 80 pounds and taller than 4’9″. Children over 40 pounds may use a lap belt if the vehicle does not have lap/shoulder belts, or all of the lap/shoulder belts are in use, because booster seats cannot be used with lap-only seat belts.

North Dakota law also requires children ages 7 to 17 to wear a seat belt.

I live in MS. Kids should be in a booster until they are 7 here. Mine will be in a booster far longer than that.

In Arkansas the law currently states six years old and 60 pounds. I have heard rumors that they are talking about increasing this to 8 years and 80 pounds. While I think this is a great idea, I wonder if another booster seat would be needed to accompany the extra age/weight/height. My daughter sat in her booster until she was seven and it almost too small for her.

    Restraint Required:
For North Carolina» A properly used child restraint device (CRD) is required if the child is less than 8 years old AND weighs less than 80 pounds. Most parents and other care givers will be able to comply by using belt-positioning booster seats for children between 40 and 80 pounds. The child must be within the weight range for the child restraint/booster seat and it must meet Federal standards in effect at time of manufacture

Ha, I just looked the guidelines up the other day because my little guy is getting close to needing a booster instead of his toddler seat. In Maine the child has to be at least 40lbs but less than 80lbs and less than 8 years old. Great idea to have people look up the state guidelines, I bet a lot of people wouldn’t have known the laws otherwise. Thanks!

Maryland law requires children to be in a car seat or booster seat until their 8th birthday, unless they weigh more than 65 pounds or are 4’9″ or taller. The law further states that the car seat must fit the child by age, height and weight, and the child must be secured in the seat and vehicle according to the instructions of the vehicle and car seat manufacturers.

To enter, tell me how long a child needs to be in a booster seat in your state. Is it six years old, seven, eight? Do they need to be both an age and a weight before moving out of a booster seat?

Well in the state of Illinois there is both the age and weight range for booster seats. They can be 4 to 8 years of age and weight is up to 88lbs. To move out of a booster seat the child has to be 8 or 88lbs. I will more than likely have my children in a booster seat longer. As a mother I wold be having my child in the booster weither there was a law or not. I want my child to be safe as possible. Just because they hit a age or weight does not mean they are big enough for the seat belts not to injure. I have found I like the backed booster much better than the no back. I have used both, on my child who is a lil shorter but has out grown his car seat. In comparing the two I have noticed the child feels more secure in the backed. The belt is much more comphortable for the child. Since there is a postioner to hold the belt at the right height fo a child. Where at in the no back the belt has nothing to hold in place where the child can put it behind them and it not do the job it should be doing. And where the belt can come a cross the child can hurt them if in an accident.

MO law – Between ages 4-7, child must weigh at least 40lbs and less than 80lbs to use a booster, as well as under 4foot 9inches
