Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

Child Passenger Safety Week is September 19-25 this year, and it is a great time to check over your current safety seat situation and make sure your kids are secure and plan for what you will need as your children grow. With many parents not knowing the laws or the guidelines for when to move their children between rear-facing safety seats and convertible seats to booster seats and beyond, this is definitely a topic worth paying attention too and reading up on.
Research done by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has shown that risk of injury to children is reduced by 60% when a belt-positioning booster seat is used rather than seat belts alone. For instance, in my state of Ohio, as of last year, 1/6/09, the law states that children between 4 and 8 years of age need to be secured in a booster seat. This is to protect children in the case of an accident who are not yet as large as an adult, but who have outgrown their car seat.
A few features of the Chicco KeyFit Strada Booster Seat:
- Easy to install and use.
- Height and width are adjustable with one hand
- Fabric cover is removable and machine washable
- Converts to backless booster for children 40 lbs – 100 lbs
- “EPS” Energy Absorbing Foam provides enhanced impact protection
- Triple side protection: head, shoulders and lumbar
- Deep side wings support child’s head and neck while napping

In Virginia, car seat laws children under age 8 to ride in an appropriate, federally approved car seat or booster seat. Virginia child passenger safety state law also requires that children ages 8 to 15 be properly restrained in a federally approved child safety seat, booster seat or seat belt, no matter where in the vehicle the child is riding.

Restraint Required:
For North Carolina» A properly used child restraint device (CRD) is required if the child is less than 8 years old AND weighs less than 80 pounds. Most parents and other care givers will be able to comply by using belt-positioning booster seats for children between 40 and 80 pounds.

SC law is that any child under the age of 5 must be in a restraint device seat. Also, the child must weigh less than 80 lbs. There is no law that regulates a child who is 6 or older to be in a booster seat but highly recommended if the child can’t sit properly with back against seat and feat over the chair and weighs less than 80 lbs. Thanks so much.

South Carolina state law requires that babies ride rear-facing in a federally approved car seat until they are at least one year old and weigh at least 20 pounds. Children ages 1 to 5 who weigh 20 to 40 pounds must ride in a car seat. children under age 6 who weigh 40 to 80 pounds must use a booster seat, and children under age 6 may not ride in the front vehicle seat, unless all rear seating positions are being used by other children, or the vehicle does not have rear seating.
