Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

Child Passenger Safety Week is September 19-25 this year, and it is a great time to check over your current safety seat situation and make sure your kids are secure and plan for what you will need as your children grow. With many parents not knowing the laws or the guidelines for when to move their children between rear-facing safety seats and convertible seats to booster seats and beyond, this is definitely a topic worth paying attention too and reading up on.
Research done by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has shown that risk of injury to children is reduced by 60% when a belt-positioning booster seat is used rather than seat belts alone. For instance, in my state of Ohio, as of last year, 1/6/09, the law states that children between 4 and 8 years of age need to be secured in a booster seat. This is to protect children in the case of an accident who are not yet as large as an adult, but who have outgrown their car seat.
A few features of the Chicco KeyFit Strada Booster Seat:
- Easy to install and use.
- Height and width are adjustable with one hand
- Fabric cover is removable and machine washable
- Converts to backless booster for children 40 lbs – 100 lbs
- “EPS” Energy Absorbing Foam provides enhanced impact protection
- Triple side protection: head, shoulders and lumbar
- Deep side wings support child’s head and neck while napping

I live in Arkansas and once your child is 6 or 60 pounds, they can be without a car seat or a booster. I personally think that’s still too small, but to each his own!

In KY kids only have to be 6 years old and 50 inches to not need a booster anymore. However we still make our 6 year old use a booster. :)

In PA, I believe the children have to be in a booster seat until 7. I honestly don’t know if you have to meet both an age and weight requirement. If they do, I would have had to still sit in a booster seat with I was learning to drive & when I got married! LOL!

I have tried to find out this information. Seems that there is a recommendation of 8 years/80 lbs, but apparently it is not law. All I know is my 4 year old is still in a 5 pt. harness convertible car seat. We are going to switch her to the booster on her 5th bday which is not far away. Hope to win this as my husband and I are both recently laid off with no good job prospects at hand…

Here in MA is required by law for children 5-7 years of age or until they reach 4’9” in height… my kids are 4 and 2 years old, so I have a long way to go with booster seats yet…

Florida law requires children under 5 years of age to be properly restrained no matter where they are seated in the vehicle. Children through age 3 must be secured in a separate carrier (child safety seat) or in a vehicle manufacturer’s integrated child safety seat. For children ages 4 – 5, a separate carrier, an integrated child safety seat, or a safety belt may be used. If a safety belt does not fit the child correctly, a booster set should be used to correctly position the lap and shoulder belts once they outgrow forward facing child safety seats (generally at about 40 pounds and 4 years old). Children from approximately 40-80 pounds and under 4’9″ in height should ride in a booster seat.

In Alabama, state law requires that children under the age of 6 be restrained in an appropriate, federally approved car seat or booster seat. Rear-facing car seats are recommended until at least age 1 and at least 20 pounds. Convertible or forward-facing car seats should be used until the child is at least 5 years old or weighs 40 pounds. Alabama law further requires that children ride in booster seats until at least age 6 and that they use seatbelts until at least age 15.
