Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:
Bring Your Book to Life!
A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds. After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon. Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!
Here are a few tips:
- Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
- Let them design what the scenery would look like
- Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
- And have fun!

My 7 year old daughter is an avid reader and self-proclaimed bookworm who is reading at the 5th grade level. The challenge for us is finding material that is not too easy for her, yet with a subject matter that is age appropriate. My 4 year old son loves to be read to or “read” by making up his own story based on the pictures. I think he sees my daughter reading constantly and follows her example. We go to the library frequently to get new books. My 7 year old is also starting her own book club with her friends this summer!

My daughter and older two boys are avid readers. I have yet to spark an interest in younger son. It is not because of too “screen time” of any type because most days he doesn’t have any. I am search for a book series that will inspire him read.

Not too many challenges here. Mostly it’s age. My 5 and 4 year olds love to read and look at books on their own or with me. My 2 year old loves to do both too, but for less time. My 6 month old doesn’t last looking at them for long, but he loves to eat them! :D We have books everywhere (one room is a library), and books have just been a part of our lives.

Thankfully, my 7 year old daughter fell in love with reading when she was only 2-3 years old. So, her appetite for reading is unbelievable. However, the summer reading programs like Borders or Barnes & Noble or even many of the local libraries have going on are great for kids. Kids (as well as Adults) all are more motivated when they have set goals to achieve and rewards at the completion.

My son simply does no like to read. I try to get him books with characters he likes like Spider Man and Transformers. He likes the pictures so he attempts to read to learn what the pictures are about.

One of the challenges I face with my older one is the onslaught of media type things (computer, video games, movies, phones, etc), even though we limit it, it is everywhere!
I also have a daughter that struggles to read and get very discouraged at every word that doesn’t come easy to her.

I’m a homeschooling mom of 5 and we can never have enough books in the house. this coming year our curriculum requires a lot of books not at our local library so the gift card would really help.

I am fortunate to have 2 boys who love to read. During the school year, we read every night before bed. My challenge is to keep them reading during the summer when our bedtime schedule isn’t quite so strict……

My girls are 1 & 3 and the challenge is getting them to sit still long enough! Hopefully having parents who love to read will make a difference when they’re old enough to read by themselves.

Can never have enough books to read!

My kids are 7 & 8 and they like to read comics and mysteries. It’s sometimes difficult to get them to read their school-related books, though.

The greatest challenge I have to getting my children to read, is to turn off the tv.
Melissa Smith
My challenge is finding quiet time…with three of them, there is always some sort of “action” occuring that they’d rather be a part of. No one seems to want to sit still at the same time!
