Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:
Bring Your Book to Life!
A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds. After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon. Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!
Here are a few tips:
- Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
- Let them design what the scenery would look like
- Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
- And have fun!

My eldest loves to read–the challenge is getting her to read appropriate books. She is 7 and wants to read books that are above her in maturity, although she can read and comprehend them (ie books for older kids, about boys and kissing and stuff. She isn’t into that and I don’t want her to be!!!).

Luckily my 2 big kids are great readers, but the little one is a struggle. She yanks the books out of my hands and filps the pages “all by herself,” making sure I don’t get a chance to actually read any of them.

The only challenge I have to getting my kids to read is my time. The would read all day long if I could read to them. I have found one way around that…audiobooks. So when we aren’t reading together, sometimes they will ask me to pop in a cd or tape of their favorite book…and then they will sit down and read with it. :) We still read together a whole lot during the day and before bedtime.

I have a ten year old son. I had hoped that he would love reading just as much as I do. Unfortunately he would rather play video games or play outside than sit and read. So I try to get him to read something for about 20 minutes a day. Maybe as he gets older he will enjoy it more.

I encourage my daughter (who’s five and just began reading) by reading to her, letting her observe and communicating *my* love of reading, and by helping her when she asks me (like with writing etc).
Sarah
I don’t have challenges yet. My daughter is 1 and LOVES to look at her books!

I fight convincing my kids that books have the same (if not better at times) fast paced action as movies or video games.

e-mail and FB subscriber… my son loves to read!! he often chooses a new book over a new toy and loves going to the book store to pick out books. he would be in heaven with this gift card to get a new selection!

My son will be 3 soon so I don’t have any challenges yet, but I am sure they will come at some point. Right now he likes to pretend read and have us read him a story.

Finding a book that interests the child and that is at the appropriate reading level. If the book is too difficult, they won’t want to read it, and if it is too easy, they will get bored. A very fine line you must walk.

Both my kids love to read so my challenge is reminding them about using the library and buying used books instead of always wanting to buy at the bookstore.
maria
my kids love to read, but always wanted to do somethiung else during the day , so I told them they can stay up an extra 30 mins if they were in their rooms reading. Now we have no hurdles!

There is really not a challenge to get our four year old to sit down to hear a book unless she’s bouncing off the walls. She LOVES books like her mommy. We got her the Tag system and that can easily keep her busy at home, in the car and when we are at someone’s house. We love TAG!!

I don’t have kids yet, and I always loved reading as a child…but we’ll see how it goes when I have kids of my own!

I have 2 boys that are school age, and 2 younger ones. As a teacher I know the importance of reading. But just because I am a teacher doesn’t mean I don’t have struggles getting my oldest 2 to read!! My eldest is so scared that he will mess up a word that he over thinks each and every word. Getting him to enjoy it and not worry has been my biggest struggle for him. My second son could care less about messing up but at this moment will only read books about Star Wars…..and finding books on his level at the library about Star Wars is just not possible. I keep trying to get him to branch out in his selections :) This is an awesome giveaway and I know that whom ever wins this will be blessed beyond measure in getting their child to read!

My older son loves to read, no challenges! My nearly one year old seems to enjoy it, but wants to eat the books too much!
Vanessa
My kids LOVE books but I have a hard time teaching them to be gentle with books. They are 4 and 19 months and most of our books have ripped pages from them turning the pages too fast.
