Win-It Wednesday: 2nd Chance for a $100 Borders Gift Card!

June 23, 2010 by Deal Seeking Mom 827 Comments

Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:

Bring Your Book to Life!

A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds.  After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon.  Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!

Here are a few tips:

  • Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
  • Let them design what the scenery would look like
  • Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
  • And have fun!

Today, another lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!

To enter, tell me what challenges you face in trying to encourage your kids to read more.

My kids can’t read yet, but sometimes I have a hard time getting them to be still so I can read to them.

We go to the library and kids get to choose their own books to read.

I have trouble getting my daughter to sit still long enough to learn about letters, reading or even for me to finish reading a whole book to her! She’s always on the go.

My daughter is participating in the Border’s summer reading program and the one from our library. Our library one is nice because they gave her a bookmark/timer that lets her time herself for 15 minutes. She logs in her 15 minutes of reading on the chart from the library. This timer and the program has really motivated her.

I have always been a huge reader and can’t wait to get my daughter to enjoy it just as much! She is currently 8 months old and I already read to her every night. Hopefully, this will get her in the routine and as she gets older will continue to love it! I know with my younger brothers, the biggest problem was their short attention spans. Bribing always worked!

It’s summer and the boys don’t want to sit and read … BUT I’ve been encouraging my oldest son (7) to read road signs, etc. as we’re driving, titles of magazines, articles, anything .. he’s really putting it all together :)

I still read to my girls (5 and 6), but in the summer it seems that we are so busy that bedtime reading gets skipped because we are pooped by the time we get to bed (or they fall asleep on the couch before they even make it to bed)!

There are just so many other distractions that reading doesn’t even cross their minds at times. I find a simple suggestion to read does the trick:-)

I’m an ex-librarian, so I am crazy about books for my son. Luckily, he really enjoys reading–if he can sit still long enough! He’s 19-months old and loves to run. We have the best luck with reading before naps and bedtime, when he’s more mellow.

My oldest (7 yo) would rather draw than read, so I encourage her to read books and look at the illustrations that go with the stories to inspire her drawings. My middle (6 yo) LOVES to read and just read Harry Potter! My baby (2 yo) LOVES to be read to. Her biggest distraction is her sisters. . . she’d rather play with them. In the summer, we typically have at least one 1/2 hour a week where we all read. I’d like that to happen every day, but that’s just not practical with all the fun that summer brings.

My 15-month-old is so active she will only sit in my lap for 1/2 a book at a time! I read to her while she’s climbing, walking, and running about.

I have all our children’s books easily accessible in the playroom, living room and bedroom. I also have books in the car to look at. As a teacher, I love reading and know it’s importance. Great giveaway!
