Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

I try to find books about things that my kids are really interested in (my son loves sports), and it usually peaks their interest.

I tie books to events. For example when reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory we toured a local chocolate company. Also, we pick a favorite charcter and try to be that character through a meal or activity.

I have 5 children & I am focusing mostly on my 8 & 6 year old to keep them up with their reading over the summer. They have signed up the summer reading program at the public library & Barnes & Nobles. I plan to do Border’s next. This way they will receive lots of free books. With my 8 year old I am also reading the same books as him so that we can discuss them. He is amazed that I like reading the same things as him. I encourage books in the car instead of toys for trips. Lastly, my children are earning Chuck E Cheese tokens. For every book they read they get a token for their jar, when the jar is full we are taking a field trip to Chuckie! (there are other ways that they are earning tokens as well)

I am an email subscriber..!! I think parents should try to take their children to the library and book fairs over the summer (if possible). Children should be challenged and have available a variety of reading books. :)

I offer incentives for the number of hours my 9-year old daughter reads. Some are small — like trips to get ice cream, while others are larger — like going camping and being able to bring a friend. She loves it and looks forward to it every summer. We also read a lot together.

My son has just decided that reading is not all that bad so he does it on a regular basis now and my daughter is 3 if you let her “read” the book to you it works great!

1. Show the kids that reading will introduce them to a whole new world, take them to faraway places, and let them travel through time. Start a family or neigborhood book group.
2.5. Have your kids recommend their favorite books to friends and get their friends’ recommendations.

My son is a math wiz, but not so great in Reading. Truth is he does not read on his own, so we require him to read a minimum of 30 minutes per day outloud to a family member. He gets to choose the book and he has 100s of books at home to choose from. He also goes to the library once per week to choose additional books that he’d like to read.

Reading aloud in the car. One child gets to read aloud while we all listen. When the reader finishes a chapter she gets to ask questions to see if we were listening. It makes reading a game and they love to see who can get the questions right.
Read the book, then watch the movie. We like to read books and then watch the movie to see the differences.

I take my kids to our local library to pick out books to read. They really love that and ask to go back. I think it’s because they are able to pick out their own books to read and since there is such a great variety that they have fun doing it. Once we get home they play library together and read books to eachother. They use their imaginations and are reading together!

Set aside a certain time each day and reading time. I like after lunch!
