As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!


HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:

“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”

    I try to find books that have been made into a movie. We read the book & watch the movie. The book is always better.

    I get my kids to read by making it a nightly ritual before going to bed. We all snuggle up on the couch or someone’s bed and read a couple of stories each night!

    I try to make reading as exicting as a movie by reading aloud to my littler ones with plenty of emotion and enthusiasm so that they really get into each caracter and really feel connected to what is going on, so by the time they are old enough to read on their own its more then just words on a page to them, it seems to have worked, my 5&1/2 year old is already reading on her own and it is by far her favorite pastime.We are rapidly running out of new books,but we live about an hour from the nearest library so i have to try to find books on sale. Its increadably worth it to work it into a tight budget especially when my two year old comes running in with a book begging to read like its the most exciting thing in the world.

    We let them each get their own library card and go once a week. They each use their own canvas bag to go pick their own books to read for the week. Then they can go with their own library card and check out their selections. This has worked so far since they get to be big kids with their own card, bag and own book selections.

    I subscribe to your blog and receive it through my email addy.

    But, I have to say that as far as getting kids to read, the trick is to keep up with your kid/s’ interests. The extra bonus is getting to really know your child’s interests, and that’s priceless. For my son, first it was skateboarding books, then the Vietnam War, then economics, etc. While he might not like to read fiction very much, he does read quite a bit of non-fiction.

    I’m proud to say that he includes books on his Christmas “wish list” that he gives me every year, so that’s what worked for us – just keeping up with his changing interests.

    Also, I have to add, taking him to book stores with me to just hang out for a couple of hours also helped. What else is he going to do but find a book to read? He finally discovered the world of knowledge through books and I couldn’t be happier.

    We join our local library’s Summer reading program where they earn fun prizes for reading ;)

    I have no problem getting my children to read all year long. They have inherited my love of reading and my 8 year old son reads on a 9th grade level! He reads everything he can get his hands on.

    The youngest can’t read yet, but is always asking us to read to him, and our oldest is getting to where we have to remind her. She likes to read but needs to work on her out loud reading, which she does not like to do. Mainly I just let them see me read, which I prefer over almost any other activity.

    We just read every day! that way it’s just habit. My kids are still learning to read, they are 6 and 7, so I also pick chapter books for me to read to them. They are so excited to hear what happens next in a story!

    Get lots of interesting books from the library and have a time when all family members read (including mom and dad). In addition read books to your children that they cannot read for themselves and discuss them.

    My son hasn’t started school yet, but one way that I get him to read is to sit and read a book with him, then let him “read” it back to me.
