Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

I actually didn’t do anything on purpose to get my kids to read more. I just have read to them since they were very little and so far, they all LOVE books. Throughout the day I will find them absorbed in one of the many books we have lying around the house. I think that also encourages them–to have lots of books accessible to them. Starting to read to them when they are young fosters a love of reading in them, but even if they’re older, I think most kids would enjoy a story time with mom and/or dad & would be encouraged to read themselves on their own time. I also limit time with the TV to no more than 1/2 hour a day.

My niece and I read together. She’s twelve and we did Twilight Series last summer. We checked in at the end of each chapter…and swooned over Edward. This summer? Its Vampire Diaries.

our reading tip –
frequent library trips at different libraries.
we try to get new books every week, and we visit different branches so the selection doesn’t get too old or too familiar. both me and my kids are excited to read our new selections together when we get home!

Pulled out all the old books I read to the girls when they were young. They have been going through them ever since. Nice memories for all of us

My kids have to read 3 books over the summer for school and I’ve offered to pay them $1 for each additional book. Our local library also offers prizes for books read, so they have plenty of initiative.

My girls are still young so I just read to them. However, growing up we each had 6 books to read over the summer. At the end of each two week period, if we had read our book, my my took us out for ice cream! I have 6 siblings so that was quite a task. It always made me want to read my books because I knew a big treat was coming! :)

As a teacher, I would read all of the books on my shelves and new books as they came out so that I could always suggest the perfect book for a particular child’s interests. I think a great option to give a child to read who doesn’t typically enjoy it are comic books. Calvin and Hobbes was one of the kids favorites in my class. It doesn’t feel like their reading.

Thank you for the Borders tip on the Double Dog Dare reading program! My daughter was so excited to get a free book that she read all 10 books within 3 days! We picked up her new book yesterday and she’s having a lot of fun reading it – especially since she put so much work into getting the book! Thanks DSM! :) I love your emails!
