Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

my son and i read everyday before bed. He is just finishing 1st grade and loves to show me how well he can read. If he doesn’t feel like reading that’s ok we just do his devotional books and go to bed. That rarely happens though. he loves to read just like his mom and dad. :)

We’re just starting to get into the stage with my baby girl that we want a greater selection of books to read to her. No point in getting worn out before she starts demanding on the same book all the time!

My way of encouraging reading was to let my children pick out a (or several) book(s), depending on age, which are of interest to them. Then on Mon-Friday during the summer, they must read 30 minutes before they can do the other fun things that they choose (If they were too young, I read to them, or they read to me aloud). This definately worked for my 23 and 18 year old adult kids, but I started when they were young, many years ago. Now they like to read! :)

My wife is a HUGE reader so she has passed her hobby onto our children. Our Oldest son just turned 7 and he LOVES to read so getting him to read is not hard. He has read all of the FLAT stanly books, our younger children (4,2) they enjoy sitting with “mom” and having her read to them. I found at borders that there is a summer award program to get kids to read while they are out of school. They read 10 books and then turn in a completed form and they are able to recieve a free book, there is a new Flat Stanley that is being given away so that is what my oldest son is focusing on, he hope to be able to get the new book in about 2 weeks!!! here is a link for the borders promotion!! https://www.borders.com/online/store/MediaView_doubledogdare?cmpid=SA_20100513_V2

Find topics that really interest each child. It is much easier to instill good reading habits if they have a reason to want to find out about something.

My kids sign up for the summer reading program at our local library. They earn incentives for reading. We also like to check out books on CD that we listen to in the car. They are great for road trips!

The one way I am trying out this year is a point system. If they read a book and tell me about it…they get two points. When they get up to 10 points they can watch 30 min of t.v. or picka prize from the basket of dollar tree treats! So far it has been a hit! I hope it lasts all summer long:)

We pick a book as a family and take turns each reading a chapter a day. Reading aloud to your children and listening to them read is important so this way you accomplish both.
Keep lots of interesting books and other reading material available.
Make a set time everyday to read.

My children love reading! I’ve read to them since they were newborns, I’m an avid reader and wanted to instill the joy of reading in my children. We always read 1-2 books before bed and I run a daycare so we have a morning and afternoon storytime. I always catch my 6 year old daughter at night hiding with her nightlight reading a book! Luckily my daughter is above her age reading level, so she always like to show off her reading skills to me!
