Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

We usually have a ‘library day’ when we go to the library and pick out books. Then I usually schedule time every afternoon for reading.

During the summer, my three kids, my husband, and I start a “book club.” We take turns choosing a book, find enough copies for each of us, and talk about the book over dinner. It helps motivate the kids, and now I know exactly what my kids are reading! Wonderful conversations have opened up through our book club discussions.

I subscribe via email. And to get kids to read, story time is great as well as trips to the library–great cool activity on a hot summer day!

My kids stay interested in books as long as they have something new and fresh to read. Since I can’t afford to keep buying books, the library has become our best friend!

A great way I get my kids to read during the summer is to make reading a priority for them. I let them know that once they read, they have the rest of their day free to do what they want. They are going to 3rd and 5th grade so they know they can’t read little baby books and they have to tell me about what they read or I print out reading summary sheets that they fill out and give details about their reading. They usually jump on reading right after breakfast or lunch so they have plenty of play time.

One way that I get my daughter to read more is by making the library a part of our weekly activities – we include both fiction and non-fiction (usually around a topic of interest) and build daily time to read together. She loves books!

My tip–good books that fit their interest level…many, many trips to the library. Also, tv time limited, substitute reading & outdoor play.

My kids just love to read. I have one kid with ADD and this is a good challenge for him to keep up with my other child who doesn’t have ADD. I could really use the gift card to purchase additional books.

My Tips for Summer Reading:
Make a monthly plan of how much reading they’ll do (minimum).
Make weekly/bi-weekly trips to the library.
Our local libraries have people that come in and read books once a week. I like taking the kids to the library for that since it exposes them to different books they might not read on their own.
Have your child read to you for 30 minutes/day. It’s great bonding time and if they don’t mind reading while you’re doing something (like folding laundry) you can get things done at the same time!
If you’re child says they’re bored, tell them to pick up their book and read.

I don’t have to “make” my daughters read, they love to & see me read all the time. My son is a different story. At 15, he’s reading for school during the summer, but in the past we entered in as many summer programs as I could find, similar to the Borders one. Our library has one, AMC theatres gave out free kids packs with a book report, so we would make that a common reward…combined with their summer free/$1 movies, it was a cheap incentive.
Thanks for the chance to win!!
