Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

My son is a little young to read on vacation at 9 months, but he does love his books. We would love to win this.

I do not have to get my son to read. It’s his favorite thing to do! I think in part because he sees mom and dad reading their own books. Nothing is like a good example!

my girls aren’t in school yet but we set aside story time every afternoon!

Oops… I left a comment originally but didn’t leave my tip for getting kids to read over the summer.
We make a weekly trip to the library. My soon-to-be first-grader loves to pick out her own books and use her own library card to check them out.
Shelley
Sometimes we make a paper chain with titles of books read and see how long we can make it. Other times we have put book reviews up on the wall. Anything to make it fun!

I don’t have kids, but I’m a middle school English teacher, so I’m frequently having to encourage kids to read. One thing that helps is I read a lot, so I’m not asking them to do something I don’t do myself. I help kids find books that interest them, so if they like cars, we go find car books. I also read a lot of the same books they do, so I always have good recommendations for them. Along that same line, fine books in a series! If they read the first one, they usually want to go on and read the next book in the series to find out what happens next, so you don’t even have to motivate them beyond the first book! Some of my favorite series right now for middle school level readers are the Hunger Games trilogy (third book comes out in August), The City of Ember and the other books in the Ember series, and the Tunnels series.

My kids love books, just like mama!! We keep a huge stack of books in the car for anytime reading. I enthusiastically read any book my 12-year-old recommends then we discuss the books in depth. I encourage my 3 year old to read her favorite books to me! Even my 18-month old sits down and “reads” books!!
Liz
we have an “adopt-a-shelf” program at our library. Each week the kids can come in and organize and straighten “thier” shelf and discover new books….very cool idea!
Joni
I read with him and then we tell eachother about our stories.

I think that drawing on their interests is a major factor. Find something they’re already interested in and they’ll be much more likely to want to read about it!

My niece joins the summer reading program through the public library and for reading a certain amount of books the library gives awards. It really motivates her to read.
