Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

We do a points system for the kids I babysit. After they’ve (we’ve) read 10 books they get enough points to redeem them for fun activities like going to the movies, getting a dessert when we go out to lunch…little stuff like that!

tara that is an awesome idea! I am going to have to pass that info/idea on to my sister who’s children do not care too much for reading.
For my daughter, I usually set aside a time to read each day. She loves reading time so I really don’t have a problem (yet)! If we get too busy or something comes up we will read before bed! It has been part of our bedtime routine since she was a baby!
Jon
We bribe them with My Wierd School books and comics

We made reading a part of our everyday routine since our boys were small infants. They love books and are excited to spend some time being read to everyday. We also refresh our stock of books with frequent trips to the bookstore and the library focusing in on their current interests so they don’t get bored.

I subscribe using google (igoogle). I check your feed every day!

My daughter likes to read with me. Alone reading time doesn’t really work, but if she wants to snuggle, I’m not complaining.
Rachel
I am also subbed through Google Reader.

Thank goodness my son loves to read and he will do it on his own when ever he feels like it.
But if he didn’t, I would just at random time of day tell him he needs to read for at least thirty minutes like I did when he was younger. He had no choice back then. Reading was mandatory. I think that is in part why he likes to read today.
Reading is Knowledge!

well my child is 22 montsh old andlove her elmo and barney movies. but we shut the tv off and read books, having new and exciting ones helps. also reading them in an exciting way really helps her to get involved. ask her questions about the book while reading is a great way for her to see how exciting it is. also we read a book before bed, tha tis how i found my love of reading from my mom reading me a book every night before bed! and after a while i was reading HER the book :)
Samina
My toddler not a reader yet, but he loves to be read to. I think he’s often happier with a book than a toy.

We go to the library and get books on stuff that he is interested in.

We do interesting things, like going to Museums, and then we read books on things he’s seen. It’s great because he makes connections and becomes even more interested in reading and learning new things.
Heidi
We go to the library every Tuesday so they can get exposed to lots of different books!!
Heidi
I subscribe also.

I get my daughter to read by having a designated time for the family to sit down open a book with no tv’s on and read for about an hour. But fortunately for me she loves it!
