Consumer Recalls: Video Baby Monitor Rechargeable Batteries + More

Consumer Recalls: Video Baby Monitor Rechargeable Batteries + More

There have been several consumer recalls over the past couple of days that may affect Deal Seeking Mom readers. Please refer to the links included in each section for more details about the specific recalls:

Rechargeable Batteries in Video Baby Monitors

Summer Infant, of Woonsocket, R.I., has recalled about 58,000 Rechargeable Batteries sold with certain Slim and Secure Video Monitors because the battery in the hand held video monitor can overheat and rupture, posing a burn hazard to consumers.  For a complete description along with model numbers, go here.  The affected video monitors were sold exclusively at Babies R Us from September 2009 to May 2010 for about $200.

Consumers should immediately stop using the video baby monitors with the recalled batteries and contact Summer Infant to receive a postage paid envelope to return the defective battery in exchange for a free replacement battery.  The monitor can continue to be used on AC power with the power cord.  For additional information, contact Summer Infant between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday at 800-426-8627, or visit the firm’s website.

Video Baby Monitors with Cords

A voluntary recall has been issued to provide new on-product labels and instructions for about 1.7 million video baby monitors with electrical cords.  The cords can present a strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers if placed too close to a crib.  Because of the serious strangulation risk, parents and caregivers should never place these and other corded cameras within three feet of a crib.  Summer Infant has initiated a campaign to provide new on-product labels for electric cords and instructions to consumers with the recalled video monitors distributed between January 2003 and February 2011.  The baby monitors were sold at major retailers, mass merchandisers, and juvenile product stores nationwide for between $60 and $300.  They were sold in more than 40 different models, including hand held, digital, and color video monitors.  All video monitors include both the camera (placed in the baby’s room) and the hand held device (some models have two hand-held devices) that enable the caregiver to see and/or hear the baby from a specific distance.  The brand “summer” is found on the product.

CPSC and Summer Infant urge parents to immediately check the location of the video monitors, including cameras mounted on the wall, and all electric cords to make sure the cords are out of arm’s reach of their child. Consumers should contact Summer Infant toll-free at 800-426-8627 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s website to receive a new permanent electric cord warning label about the strangulation risk and revised instructions about how to safely mount the camera and keep cords out of child’s reach.

Consumer Recalls: Generation 2 Worldwide "SafetyCraft" Cribs + More

There have been several consumer recalls over the past couple of days that may affect Deal Seeking Mom readers. Please refer to the links included in each section for more details about the specific recalls:

Generaton 2 Worldwide “SafetyCraft” Brand Drop-Side Cribs

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers that “SafetyCraft” brand full-size and portable drop-side cribs manufactured or distributed by Generation 2 Worldwide of Dothan, Alabama, contain drop-side hardware that appears to be identical to Generation 2 Worldwide ChildESIGNS brand drop-side cribs recalled in February 2010.  This hardware found on SafetyCraft drop-side cribs can fail and place infants and toddlers at risk of strangulation and suffocation.  CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby.  Do no attempt to fix these cribs. Because Generation 2 Worldwide ceased operations, CPSC has limited information about these cribs and where they were sold.  CPSC has been unable to identify major retailers that sold these cribs.  The name “SafetyCraft” appears on a label affixed to the crib’s headboard or footboard.  Product labels may identify the place of manufacture as Indonesia or Dothan, Alabama.   For more details, go here.

Sunbeam Convertible Irons

A voluntary recall has been announced on Sunbeam Convertible Clothes Irons because the iron can overheat and cause a fire because of a wiring issue, posing a risk of burn injury to consumers.  The recalled irons are blue and gray and are a hand-held garment iron that converts to a garment steamer.  The model number (GCSBRS – 103) can be found on the bottom of the iron’s plastic base.  The recalled irons have date codes C235 or C237 imprinted on the blade of the plug and on the bottom of the packaging.  The affected irons were sold at Bed Bath & Beyond stores nationwide from June 2010 to November 2010 for about $60.

Consumers should immediately stop using the irons and contact Sunbeam for a free replacement.  For additional information, call Sunbeam at 800-656-9708 anytime or visit the firm’s website.
