One of the most common questions I get about stockpiling is, “How do you manage your stockpile?” Frankly, this is something I still struggle with. My kitchen pantry is relatively small — certainly not large enough to house a stockpile that will sustain a family of seven. We have additional shelving, as well as an extra refrigerator and deep freezer in the garage, but I’ll admit that it’s difficult at best to keep tabs on everything.

The hardest thing for me about keeping a pantry organized is….no pantry. We pretty much have a single cabinet that gets used to store our canned goods. Now, if we could convert our hot water heater to a tankless version, and maybe an over/under washer/dryer unit, we could probably get a pantry into the laundry room off the kitchen…but right now that’s not possible.

The hardest part of keeping my pantry clean is definitely the bags. My son has food intolerance issues, so we buy a lot of bagged goods, and those just don’t fit anywhere well. We also have a LOT of canned goods that we (regrettably) pile on our rotating shelves. Every time I rotate them, things fall. Oh, well. I try!

My kitchen is very very small. We’re talking room for one person to stand and that’s it. All the shelving is set very high, beyond my reach almost. In fact I can only utilize the bottom two shelves. Which is why I set up a stackable floor shelf unit right outside the kitchen doorway for non-perishables. And believe me, it’s well within reach to grab that can of corn or box of pasta.
