Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

Child Passenger Safety Week is September 19-25 this year, and it is a great time to check over your current safety seat situation and make sure your kids are secure and plan for what you will need as your children grow. With many parents not knowing the laws or the guidelines for when to move their children between rear-facing safety seats and convertible seats to booster seats and beyond, this is definitely a topic worth paying attention too and reading up on.
Research done by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has shown that risk of injury to children is reduced by 60% when a belt-positioning booster seat is used rather than seat belts alone. For instance, in my state of Ohio, as of last year, 1/6/09, the law states that children between 4 and 8 years of age need to be secured in a booster seat. This is to protect children in the case of an accident who are not yet as large as an adult, but who have outgrown their car seat.
A few features of the Chicco KeyFit Strada Booster Seat:
- Easy to install and use.
- Height and width are adjustable with one hand
- Fabric cover is removable and machine washable
- Converts to backless booster for children 40 lbs – 100 lbs
- “EPS” Energy Absorbing Foam provides enhanced impact protection
- Triple side protection: head, shoulders and lumbar
- Deep side wings support child’s head and neck while napping

In CO they must be in a booster until 8 or if they are over 4’9″ or over 80 lbs before that.

Georgia Law states a child must remain in a booster seat until age 8 or when they are 4’9″ tall.

I only know that infants need to be rear-facing until 20 pounds and one year of age in my state. My pre-schooler is in a five point harness seat. I believe that he must stay in the five point harness until at least 40 lbs, 4 years of age and then he could possibly be in a booster seat until age 8, 80 lbs. I’ll keep him in the five point harness as long as he fits in there!

Good Morning – I’m in Tennessee and here’s the law about the child seats. Children under one (1) year of age, or any child, weighing twenty (20) pounds or less, must be secured in a child passenger restraint system in a rear facing position, meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards, in a rear seat, if available, or according to the child safety restraint system or vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. (Note: If the child safety seat has a higher rear-facing weight rating, usually 30 or 35 pounds, it may be continued to be used in a rear-facing position so long as the child’s weight permits. Check the manufacturers instructions accompanying the child safety seat for more information.)
Children age one (1) through age three (3), and weighing more than twenty (20) pounds, must be secured in a child safety seat in a forward facing position in the rear seat, if available, or according to the child safety restraint system or vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.
Children age four (4) through age eight (8), and measuring less than four feet nine inches (4’9″) in height, must be secured in a belt-positioning booster seat system, meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards in the rear seat, if available, or according to the child safety restraint system or vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. (Note: If the child is not between age four (4) and age eight (8), but is less than four feet nine inches (4’9″) in height, he/she must still use a seat belt system meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards.)
I love this website and use it very often.

In Ohio, a child must be rear facing until the age of 1, but I heard they are trying to change that till age 2.

I also live in Ohio, so our law is 4-8 years old.
Cindy Confalone
In PA, Kids under four must ride in a federally-approved car seat or booster.
Kids between four and eight must ride in a booster if they have outgrown a safety seat.
Kids between eight and 18 must use a seat belt.
Isel
Illinois state law requires that children under the age of 8 be secured in an appropriate child safety seat, whether that be a car seat or booster seat. Children under age 8 but weighing more than 40 pounds may ride in the back seat with a lap belt only if there are not lap/shoulder belts available in the vehicle to be used with a booster seat.

In Virginia, children must be in a safety seat until the age of 8. No height or weight requirements, just the age.
