Child Passenger Safety Week is September 19-25 this year, and it is a great time to check over your current safety seat situation and make sure your kids are secure and plan for what you will need as your children grow. With many parents not knowing the laws or the guidelines for when to move their children between rear-facing safety seats and convertible seats to booster seats and beyond, this is definitely a topic worth paying attention too and reading up on.

Research done by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has shown that risk of injury to children is reduced by 60% when a belt-positioning booster seat is used rather than seat belts alone. For instance, in my state of Ohio, as of last year, 1/6/09, the law states that children between 4 and 8 years of age need to be secured in a booster seat. This is to protect children in the case of an accident who are not yet as large as an adult, but who have outgrown their car seat.

    I’m ashamed to say that I am unsure of the law since we moved to Kansas–we have always kept our kids in boosters as long as possible. My petite 9 yr. old still uses one most of the time.

    Live in Florida — children must be in a booster until age 5. Would love to win — we are in need of one soon :)

    In MN a child who is both under age 8 and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches to be fastened in a child safety seat or booster

    In Georgia, booster seats are recommended for children 4-8 years old who are less than 4’9” tall.

    In Hawaii, all children under age four be restrained in a federally approved child safety seat, children ages four through seven ride in a booster seat or car seat any time they are in a vehicle. The only exceptions are for children taller than 4’9″ or those riding in vehicles with lap-only seatbelts in rear seats.

    In Texas the new law requires children younger than 8 and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches to ride in car seats or booster seats. This law was only pasted in 2010!

    Seven in Hawaii. 4’9″ tall and weighs at least 80 pounds. I’m so glad you made me look. My kiddos are still little, but its always good information to know!
