Child Passenger Safety Week is September 19-25 this year, and it is a great time to check over your current safety seat situation and make sure your kids are secure and plan for what you will need as your children grow. With many parents not knowing the laws or the guidelines for when to move their children between rear-facing safety seats and convertible seats to booster seats and beyond, this is definitely a topic worth paying attention too and reading up on.

Research done by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has shown that risk of injury to children is reduced by 60% when a belt-positioning booster seat is used rather than seat belts alone. For instance, in my state of Ohio, as of last year, 1/6/09, the law states that children between 4 and 8 years of age need to be secured in a booster seat. This is to protect children in the case of an accident who are not yet as large as an adult, but who have outgrown their car seat.

    In Texas the law is that a child can be in a booster if they are 4 yrs old and 40+ lbs. A child has to be in a booster until they are 4’9 or 8 years old.

    In FL, it seems that children under the age of 5 must be properly restrained, but really they only get specific with height and weight from what I could find.
    ‘Children from approximately 40-80 pounds and under 4’9″ in height should ride in a booster seat.’
    We are in need of a seat for our oldest son, so this is an awesome giveaway to me. It would be superb to win! Thanks for the chance!!!!

    There have been some cinderella themed commercials lately that the magic number is 4’9″ before they can ride w/o anything! (AL)

    In Wisconsin:
    Age 4 to age 8, between 40-80 lbs., and no more than 4 ft. 9 ins. must be in a booster seat

    I think it’s 80 pounds or 10 years old… my kids still have a long ways to go, so I’ll figure out for sure in a few years! :)
