Win-It Wednesday: 2nd Chance for a $100 Borders Gift Card!

June 23, 2010 by Deal Seeking Mom 827 Comments

Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:

Bring Your Book to Life!

A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds.  After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon.  Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!

Here are a few tips:

  • Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
  • Let them design what the scenery would look like
  • Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
  • And have fun!

Today, another lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!

To enter, tell me what challenges you face in trying to encourage your kids to read more.

My biggest challenge for my son to read more is that he is a newborn and can’t read yet.

My daughters love to read and be read to. The only challenge is there are so many things to do in the summer. It is hard to get to everything.

My kids really love to read! The only challenge is my 3 year old is so busy, he wants to read all of the books at the same time, we can never finish one! :)

I don’t have children yet, but I have a niece that hates reading – she finally found a series of books she likes and is hooked. I am totally happy for her because I am a book-aholic! :)

    Thanks, Elisabeth

I let my son read Stephen King. It got him hooked, because he thought it was really grown-up.

The challenges I face are not having enough time, and finding books that are interest enough for both my niece n nephew…

Oddly…. my VERY active 2 year old only slows down for books – the book store is a big treat for him ;)

There are many distractions, like video games and tv, so we make a weekly trip to the library for books so they read more.

My children love to be read to but they can’t yet read themselves. It’s a challenge to find the time to sit and read to them but we manage.

No kids, but my own difficulty with reading is it puts me to sleep–even if I love the book I’m reading!

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
