Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

I’d take them to the library and let them pick so they would want to read more!

I have 2 kids and I have always made sure to read to them everyday since they were little. They can’t wait for me to read because I love to add my own voices for the characters and I really get into it. My son just had his first year of kindergarten and was one of the top readers in his class and I believe its because he has been read to since he was little. When the children I babysit come over he now will sit down with the little ones and read to them and that is just so exciting.

I am lucky I passed on my addiction to reading to my kids. Our favorite reading time, is “beach chair therapy” on a quiet afternoon. Naps do occur..hahahaha. Sometimes on game night, we play “Book Pictionary”..a made up game. When you roll dice for a caetgory, you have to pick a book within that gendre and draw it…we have to guess…they get tough on us old people, LOL!

My kids love to read. They especially love to track how much they’ve read so the prizes at Borders and the local libraries also provide a great incentive. We love to choose a chapter book to read from each night before they turn in for the evening as well. It’s a wonderful way to end our days.

Mine isn’t old enough to read alone, but he loves to read with me. I like to read books based on the tv shows he’s interested in – esp the Mr Men & Little Misses books. And, THANK YOU! I didn’t realize there was a new David Shannon book. Must buy it asap!

I let them them choose which books they want from the library.

My husband and I read to the kids every night. We let our older daughter (2) choose what she wants us to read to her and her brother. We keep all of their books in one area, and she typically digs through to find the Dr. Seuss or Elmo themed books.

..discussing the book and creating a link to another book(s)/series that continues a story line e.g. chronicles of narnia.

We try to go to the library once a week. If nothing else, it gives them exposure to books on a regular basis.

Thankfully it doesn’t take much to motivate my 2 yr old to read. He loves it! We plan on spending quite a bit of time this summer in borders kiddie section and at the library.

I don’t have children so I take the opportunity to take my friends and neighbors’ kids to the library and local bookstore. It gives the adults a break from the kids and allows me to show all the exciting things they could be learning about

I have recently been taking my son to the library. He can’t read yet but I am trying to instill the importance of reading and learning young!

I ordered the Lego magazine for my son. He keeps asking me to read it to him and I sit down with him and have him read it to me!
Karen
I take my kids to the Library each week and let them explore and find a book they WANT to read. It helps if they are interested and not forced to read something.

I don’t have kids yet, but my husband and I love to read during the summer (and the winter!) We recently got rid of cable so a gift card would help stock us on books for a while!
