Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

We visit our local library and everyone chooses their books. We set aside time each day to read. We also take advantage of free book programs at Borders, Half Price, and Barnes and Noble.

I get my kids reading by selecting a theme for the week and getting books that go along with it. We also try to make food from the book(s) we are reading.

My kids love to read, so weekly trips to the library are all it takes to encourage them.

My 7 year old son enjoys reading… if he chooses the books. Right now he is reading a Magic Treehouse book and working on the wimpy kid diary… both things he enjoys!

My kids love to read & I encourage their summer reading by taking them to garage sales with me & letting them pick out any books they want. It gives them freedom to choose books I might not purchase at full price.

I get my kids to read by taking them to the library, reading to them, making sure they are reading age appropriate books and books they like (topics, characters, etc.).

We read a series of books each summer. We have done all the Little House on the Prairie books, Anne of Green Gables, and Chronicles of Narnia. When my daughter was younger I read them outloud to her, but as she got older I let her do the reading to me. She will be reading the Left Behind series this summer ;-)

I don’t have kids so I have no chance to read to them, but I ever read to my nieces/nephews when they are very young….haha…
I have just join your forums…lots of info that I missed earlier…

My daughter is still a toddler, so she has no perception of “summer” break yet. :) But, we incorporate reading into every day – in fact, she looks forward to snuggling with me right before naps and bedtime and reading her favorite books.

I take my kids to the library at least once a week. We spend time looking at all kinds of books and reading, and we participate in the free classes for kids. I usually can’t leave the library without a stack of books for them.

When my boys were younger, we always encouraged them to read. In the summer, their allowance would be doubled – but the deal was they had to spend the “bonus” on a book. It made them feel grown up to spend their own money, and I gave them as much freedom in book choice as I could. They really looked forward to those trips to the bookstore, and by the end of the summer they’d always have quite a list of books they hadn’t had time to read. A lot of those books became birthday or Christmas presents, or just because gifts. My boys are grown now, but both are still avid readers … and I still give them books or gift cards to book stores for birthdays and Christmas :)
