Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

We do all the local and national reading programs and my kids have had library cards since the day they were born – they have that in the new baby packet at the hospital. We have a large county library with multiple branches in my city and we visit one or two branches at least twice a week.

girl 7 year old loves to read…boy 5, just out of pre-school we are working on “activity” time with letters and numbers.

I have told my kids that a good book can even be more exciting than watching a movie and has way more details than a movie. My girls love to read now. Getting into a series makes them wanting to read more too. My oldest daughter loves Erin Hunters Warrior Cats books. She tells me they are addicting!!

We borrow two copies of the same book and have a mini reading club. We have ice-tea in the front room and take turns reading. This gets my son interested in the book and I grow in my knowledge of teen sci-fi books.

We make it a family event. We all go to the bookstore together, pick out books and then have family reading time. We motivate the kids to finish their books with the incentive of getting to pick out new books when they finish.

My trick is to make the library a fun destination. We walk from our house and go to Starbucks or Jamba Juice first then we hit the library where they are each allowed to check out 4 books each week. This way they have to really want to read the books that they are checking out so they will put some thought into which books they come home with.

I try to keep my 3 boys engaged by letting them pick out and purchase a book, and then we read it together, a little each night. I also stock up on books at Goodwill or garage sales so there is always plenty to choose from in the house.

I am doing something this summer where she has to earn computer/game/TV time by reading. I’m not sure if I’ll make her read one hour to watch an hour. I am still working that out.

Teach my kid to read :)

Kids will read books if they see you as a parent reading books as well. You set the example and they will follow. They also like to read books on their favorite movies and television shows.
Nicole
I have my kids participate in the library’s summer reading program. They make reading fun by offering prizes as incentives and having a fun fair at the end of the program. It makes summer reading much more interesting!

Taking them to the local library during “kid’s corner” was a great way of getting them interested in reading during the summer. Several staff/volunteers take turns reading to age appropriate groups of children in a very antimated manner–at times it’s more like a play. The also have a home reading list they past out to the kids, not the parents, that are similar or related books. My kids always feel “grown up” when they get the list and run to the stacks to grab the books.
Our favorite time to read during the day is right after lunch…and of course bed time at night.

Well, my children are quite small, so we just do lots of reading together as a family. We will be participating in the summer reading program at our local library too.
