Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

I have my 9 year old son read to my 4 year old daughter…gets him to read during the summer without “realizing” that is what I am doing. He just thinks he is being a GREAT big brother!

For my daughters I can usually hype a book pretty well and they can’t wait to read it but my 9 year old son would rather play video games so I read him a chapter and he reads me 2 chapters (this helps with his stuttering as well). If he decides to read on his own he gets out of 1 chore for every 3 chapters he reads.

My kids are 2 and 4. They LOVE to read! We always read 2-4 books before bedtime and some throughout the day. They love going to the pool so limiting TV time is easy!

My daughter is almost 3 & just got back into reading books….I try to switch out her books often & add new ones to the mix to keep her interested.

Summer reading has been the same deal since my kids were small. They may have one minute of video game time for every minute of reading they do, up to 45 minutes per day. My boys are now teenagers and it still works! They often choose to read more than 45 minutes but that’s the limit on video game time per day. Works for us!

My son is learning to read and enjoys reading any new book he can get his hands on. He reads at least 1 day to me. He is just so proud of himself when he gets to the end of the book!
Kristin
We have reading time before bed year round. Our son prefers reading over going to bed, so he doesn’t complain!

Awesome giveaway, my husband and I read along with the children, we make it family time!

You are in my google reader desktop thingy….does that count as “following” you? I click on it every day :-) (& I clearly know nothing about the world of blogging).

My girls really don’t need any encouragement– they LOVE to read! However, the youngest was given a challenge by her 2nd grade teacher to read 420 minutes this summer (plus other math and writing assignments) and they get to attend a “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” party in August! How fun! We are now working through the challenge together so that she can go to the party.

I get my daughter interested in books by reading to her every night. She is 1.5yo so she can’t read yet, but she loves books already!
Don
I let them know that after reading for an hour or so, we can go to the movies or a bike ride…works well!
Jennifer
We go camping (in a tent) several times over the summer. Not only do they need to fill the drive there and back (no DVD player for us!), but they also get time during the day at the campsite to read. But my favorite part is each evening after dinner we stoke up the campfire and read a “Camp Book” outloud to our friends and family.

Subscribed to email (even though I am on the website 3-5 times a day)…..lol!

My oldest son is obsessed with books! As soon as he gets home he is looking for one. My 4 year old pretends to read, we are starting to teach him how to sound out words.

Every year I get my nieces and nephews new books for the summer. We sit outside at the park and read them together. They love it! Great kids! :)

To get kids interested in reading, start at an early age. 6 months is a good age to start reading to your child. Read to them every day/night. Also set an example and have them see you reading too. Get books with characters your kids like so they want to read. Make sure the books are age-appropriate as well…if kids are frustrated with trying to figure out the words, they won’t want to read.

I’m an avid reader and hope to pass this on to my 2 kids. Can’t wait for story time at the library this summer.

My kids love to read as long as it’s a book about something they enjoy. I try to help them find books about activities they like.

We love the Summer Reading program that our library does … cool prizes like Ice-Cream-Coupons, French-Fry-Coupons, and medals are great motivators!
