Win-It Wednesday: $100 Borders Gift Card!

June 9, 2010 by Tara Kuczykowski

Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:

“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”

One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!

To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?

+++++++++++++++

Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

My daughter just turned 4 so she’s just starting letter recognition. However both of my kids love books. I get them to “read” by getting them new books! I regularly hit up second hand stores and library book sales for cheap books. They love anything new!

Book stores are my ultimate downfall… I tend to not even go in them because I love books so much and I spend too much money!

For my special little friends a promise to go to the park after they reach their goal is a great way to encourage them to read more.

My son is two and we like to go to the library, pick out some books, and sit on the beanbags there and read them. Also, before nap-time he gets to choose a book from his bookshelf to keep in bed with him.

A visit to the library usually does the trick – they can check out as many books as they want (well, up to 10 anyways), and we read one each day. Once we get through them all, we go back again!

My girls, 3 and 18 months, LOVE to read books. To keep their attention, I read loud and animated, as they tend to wander around while I read. Thanks for the great giveaway– we start homeschooling my oldest in the fall so this would come in really handy!

I like to introduce books based on a topic that we have discussed as a family or a place that we have visited. We have talked about the Revolution recently, so I encouraged him to read Johnny Tremain…and he LOVES it!

I let my kids pick out their own books to read (even comics) and in the summer we have quiet time each day, without any electronic devices, and we all sit and read. Sometimes their friends come in and read too.

My teenage daughter loves to read, but in the summer is busy with other things. To keep her reading, we read together before bed. Also, our library has a great summer program for teens with prizes for that age group.

Read with you child and make it fun. We used to have a special spot that we set up with blankets and pillow. It was just fun time together.

Find books about things that interest your children.

My 11 year old has always been read to when she was younger and has always seen me with a book reading, so she’s developed a natural affection for reading since early on. She has even started to write her own stories.

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
