“Oh, Dyson, where have you been all my life?”
It sounds like something out of a soap opera, doesn’t it? But I am truly, madly in love with the Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner I was sent to review.
So what makes the Dyson DC25 so fantastic?
Maneuverability — I had my doubts about just how much easier the ball design would make vacuuming, but it really works! It makes it so much easier to roll the vacuum around tight corners. It’s smooth and effortless, and as a bonus, even the older kids can push it!
Suction — I knew that we were nearing the time to replace our Hoover Windtunnel Upright, but I had no idea just how much dust and dirt it was NOT picking up. This was readily apparent the first time I took the Dyson DC25 for a spin.
I was totally unprepared for the amount of dirt in the canister when I was done. I may as well have not vacuumed at all over the past five years that we’ve been in our house from the looks of it. I wish I had thought to take a picture before my husband dumped the canister — it truly was the height of ickiness.
Convenience — I simply love the Telescope Reach wand feature. If I had a nickel for every time I went to use the wand on my Hoover only to find it MIA, I could probably have paid for the Dyson in change! But that’s not all — not worrying about replacing bags and the ease of emptying the canister rank high on convenience as well.
So what don’t I like?
Frankly, it’s got a pretty hefty price tag. At $499, it’s going to have to last quite awhile to offset the up front costs. With a five-year warranty, that shouldn’t be an issue.
But what I found more compelling than the warranty was Dyson’s analysis of the maintenance costs of other vacuums over a five-year period. The Dyson clocks in at $0 because there are no bags, belts or filters to replace. However, they calculate that other vacuums could cost as much as an additional $445 over a five-year period if you perform the routine maintenance recommended by the manufacturer!
So overall, yes, I am very impressed with the Dyson DC25, and I’m kicking myself for not making the investment years ago when my husband was trying to persuade me it was a good idea. Five kids and two dogs put a lot of wear and tear on our carpets, and I really think that we would not have the need to replace them so soon if we’d used a quality vacuum from the start.
Do you own a Dyson, and if so, what are your thoughts on it? Or have you found another vacuum that you feel works just as well at a lower price point?

Bought my Dyson DC17 this past summer. Absolutely love it. Picks up better than anything I’ve ever used before. Have 3 boys, 2 dogs and a lot of dirt tracking through my house. Boy oh boy did I need a very good vacuum. I originally paid $600 (OUCH!) and couldn’t bring myself to take it out of the box. Couldn’t reconcile the price in my head. 1 week later it went on sale for $200 less. Took the receipt to Sears and they credited my credit card. Felt much better about unwrapping it after that. Like Danielle said it was money well spent!

I LOVED my Dyson. Unfortunately, my mother convinced me to purchase a Rainbow ($1800+, ouch!) thinking it was the best thing ever. Well, lets just say I miss the Dyson. Even the Rainbow is great, I still think the Dyson worked better and didn’t shred the carpet as bad. I thought it was pet hair at first, but the clumps of fiber I soon realized was from the carpet being beaten to death by the Rainbow. I sold my Dyson on craigslist and now regret it.

We’ve had out Dyson for almost 5 years and even through we now have hard wood floors, I still love my Dyson. I seriously have family that ask me every month or so if they can borrow it so they can give their homes a GOOD CLEANING. We bought ours prior to the ball models. SO ours is not AS maneuverable but I don’t care. I <3 Dyson! Maybe in another 5 years I will buy a new one.

I love my Dyson! I have the blue one with the hepa filter. It is the best vacuum I have ever had. I’ve never had this much fun vacuuming. I can even get other people to do my vacuuming for me, they love to see all of the stuff it picks up :)

My cleaning lady has an Oreck, and every time she comes here, she says how she can’t wait for her Oreck to die, because she loves the Dysons that she uses in 2 of the houses she cleans!
Holly… try a Dyson AFTER you vacuum with your Eureka, and see how much you like your Eureka then! Same with the Kirby. I HATE my mom’s Kirby!
As for the pets, I have the “animal” version and the only difference is an attachment that I never use. If you allow your pets on furniture, this might come in handy.

I LOVE MY DYSON!! I have the animal one. I convinced my parents to get one and now my brother has one and my in laws. They are great vacuums!

I have the one with the purple ball. I love it but the suction isn’t quite as strong as the rainbow. I also miss using my vac to clean up spills. Any suggestions on how to get it to pic up all the little stuff on my concrete floors?

I was talked in to buying a Dyson and it was the biggest mistake I could ever have made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First it does lose sucktion over and over, they replaced the parts that they said were recalled. I have the one that is suppose to be for pet hair, that’s a big joke. I spend about 30 min. everytime I vacum unwinding the hair from the wheel in side of my vacum that was suppose to be made to handle hair!!! And it takes longer to cleaning of the vacum your suppose to do then it does to vacum the carpet. But I paid almost $500 for it so I keep making myself suffer through it, but I tell everyone I meet, DON’T BUY A DYSON THEY SEEM GOOD AT FIRST BUT THEY ARE THE WORST!!! Get a Dirt devil.

I have two kids, a cat, and two dogs, one of which sheds an unbelieveable amount of fur, so much so, I could make another dog every few days with what I suck up in my vacuums. Yes I said Vacuums! I have yet to find a vacuum that handles my house. I am very leary of purchasing a Dyson, even though the reviews are usually always good. The price tag is enough to scare anyone away. I can say I have been through about 12 vacuums in the last four years, currently I am using an Oreck, and a very old Kenmore, that is no longer made, these have been the best yet, and have lasted more than 6 months now. I would challenge ANY vacuum manufacturer to Lend me a vacuum for 6 months! My father teases me, that if there is a vacuum out there, I know how to break it! I wish you could “Test Drive” vacuums for a month or two before you bought them!

And I meant to spell suction wrong. ha ha

LOVE Dyson! I bought ours 5 years ago. It was a remanufactured and it still works great. At the time, we had 2 indoor dogs and a cat. I bought the purple on for pet hair and it worked like a charm! The new one looks awesome! Yes, I too was unsure about the price. But it has been well worth it!

Love my Dyson ball vacuum cleaner, but I wouldn’t say there is $0 cost for 5 years. You have to clean the filter every 6 months, if you want to maintain suction (which means the vacuum is out of commission for at least 24-48 hours to allow enough time for the filter to dry). Eventually, you will want to replace said filter and the brush bar, as the bristles will wear down. If you neglect these items, the vacuum will begin to lose it’s awesome suction over time (especially the filter, this is a common problem with bagless vacuums), but if you maintain it, the Dyson is an awesome vacuum compared to less expensive models I have tried.

We have a Dyson & love it. Our Big Lots here in South Florida sells the remanufactured ones for a good price with a full warranty. Ours works great on all the dirt and sand the dog brings in from the backyard.
Amy @ Finer Things
We have a Dyson, but not the one with the ball. Kicking ourselves over that! Our Dyson doesn’t fit well under furniture.
Linda
I have the Dyson yellow ball and I LOVE it!! I got it at Target back in May on sale for only$299!!!!!!!!! Regular price is $399. What a steal!
Anita
I recently bought the Dyson DC28, and I absolutely LOVE it. I can’t believe the “stuff” that it picked up from my carpet. I too, wish that I had purched one long ago. I have recommended it to everyone I know.

I have an older purple animal Dyson. I really like it, however, we recently had a person come check our carpet as it was looking very worn and is not even 5 years old. It has a 10 year warranty, and I was hoping to have it replaced, or at least discounted. The carpet was found to be worn more than it should, however, the carpet company claimed that we were not using an approved vacuum, and hence I voided my warranty. I had wondered why the appraiser took many pictures of my vacuum. I thought it was absurd that I purchased a pricey vacuum to take care of my carpet, and it ended up voiding my warranty! They did tell me that the beater bar on the Dyson was harsh on the carpet, but no other explaination.
Melissa
I love my Dyson!! I got it from Odd Lots last Christmas time on sale for $250. It picks up so much more than my old vac. No bags or filters to buy. It’s awesome. It is worth the initial expense because I’ll never have to buy bags again. As long as I clean the filter regularly it works as well as the day I got it!
Robin
I love my Dyson!!!! The only thing that I don’t like about it is the hose. It is part of the handle and when you pull it off to use it the hose gets pinched off, it is quite akward to use. As for the price, it is a lot of money, had I not found such an awsome deal I would probably still be using my Hoover. I got my Dyson, NEW, for dum-da-da-dum $10.00!! Deals like this are what make me the Bargain Mavin. LOL
Jacquelyn
We have two dogs, one that sheds a lot and we got a refurbished animal dyson, I love it, it is the best thing ever!
Tammy
I love my Dyson! it is a little heavy but with 3 cats I need the suction. I have used many different vacumns and let me tell you this one is by far the best except for the weight of it, I absolutley love it! WORTH every penny I spent on it! Wish I could afford one for upstairs in my new house as well as in the basement so I dont have to carry it up and down the stairs. Ebay here I come!!!
Maria
We have the Dyson animal and like you, the first time we tried it, I could not believe the amount of stuff that came off our carpet! And we had just vacuumed with our old vacuum. Our son has allergies and the Tyson had helped us keep the dust and animal hair down. Worth every penny and after 18 months of owning it, completely trouble-free!
Rebecca Kiehl
I own a Kerbie!!! Shocking I know. I bought my Kerbie for 650.00. I love the shampooer, the attachments, the suction, and the look. I was debating on a Dyson or a Kerbie… I did my research and what was reasonable for our budget. My vacuum has many features. What we pay to keep our houses clean!!!!!
Amy
I have a Dyson, and I’ve about beat it to death (not on purpose; we just have lots of dirt with cats, several little boys, drywall dust, etc.) and it’s still going. I just have to remember to clean the spongy filter thing every so often or else it starts to whine.
I would LOVE to try out a newer model — how do I get in on THAT?!
Kaycee
I love love LOVE our Dyson. We made the investment when the vacuum we got for our wedding broke 4 years later. Amazingly the store we got it from gave us store credit (Hooray for Bed Bath and Beyond!) on it even 4 years later!! So we had about $200 already from that, since we figured we’d spend about $200 anyway before we knew that they would take it back we decided to still spend the $200 and use the store credit too and get a Dyson. BEST decision ever! :)
KD
I have the Dyson animal and love it. My family thought I was insane for paying that much when I am so cheap when it comes to anything else but I truly believe that sometimes you get what you pay for. However I did find it at kohls.com and it was during one of those sales where you can get 30% off well I found the discount code online and ordered it with free shipping. So I got roughly $150 off. We have owned it for nearly 4 years and I wouldn’t give it up for anything. You can also use it on bare floors to pick up hair and stuff. Best investment ever!!

jennifermathis
oooh.. plus order through your upromise account and earn an extra $12!!!

I guess I’m in the minority. My husband bought ours and I hate it. It’s really heavy, hard to manuver, and won’t pick up larger-sized items (like leaves.) It has something in the front so that it won’t get under tables and furniture. I have to move everything. On the plus side, my husband knew how mad I was at him buying this stupid machine without my knowledge so he vacumns now almost exclusively!
Jessica
I have the DC25 And i love it! Probably the best vaccum i’ve ever used. I like how its versitile for all floors so i can just vaccum up the cheerios my 2yr old dumps from her high chair in the kitchen while im still in the lving room. I also like the long cord , it reaches pretty far in my house.
