Looking for another green freebie? Well, look no further. Kroger wants to give you a reusable shopping bag just for entering their reusable shopping bag contest. All you have to do is design your own reusable shopping tote, and they’ll credit your Kroger card for the cost of one of their bags.
Even better? When you submit your design, others will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite design. Great prizes will be awarded to the top 10 bag designs, with one lucky designer winning a $1,000 Kroger gift card and the chance for their bag design to be sold in stores. Judges will also select four finalists who will receive $250 Kroger gift cards and five runners-up who will receive $100 Kroger gift cards!
How’s that for an incentive to go green? And yes, that’s my not-so-creative bag pictured above.
Need another incentive?
Kroger has generously given me two $25 gift cards to pass on to two lucky winners to help draw attention to their green efforts. I hope you’ll all take a minute to create a bag and submit your design!
How can you win?
Share your biggest barrier to using reusable shopping totes. Is it hard to remember them? Do you have difficulties bagging your items? Would a small credit for using them be an incentive? Can you think of any ways to solve the issue? I’m just interested in your thoughts on the whole issue.

I have bags for different stores but I always forget to put them in the car when I go to the store!

My first obstacle was having to pay for something I wasnt certain I would use. I got over that barrier by using the free when you purchase Betty Crocker coupon and the Kroger offer you mentioned above. Now that I have the bags, I keep FORGETTING them! After doing it the first time, I made sure I put them in our car. Then I forgot to take them into the store. Maybe I’ll remember next time. I’m going to put my coupon box on top of them so I CANT FORGET!
Leslie
My challenge is that I forget my reuseable bag. I like some of the ideas listed above, so I’ll have to try them. Thanks!

we have lots of the reusable bags – some purchased and some that i made – and we try to keep them in the car, but sometimes we forget to take them in to the store, or we don’t take enough in! also, around the house, the bags get comandeered for other things, so the supply in the car shrinks!

I guess the biggest problem we have is remembering to take the bags with us. We deal with this most of the time by putting the bags in one of the storage pockets in the van right after we put away the groceries. But sometimes when we buy frozen or refrigerated foods, the bags are damp and need to be hung in some out of the way spot to dry. And very often we don’t think of them again until we are standing in line at the store.

My biggest problem is remembering to take them to the store. Once I unpack my groceries it seems impossible to remember to put them back in the car. I’ve found that having extras so I can have them in both the house and the car is helpful.
Noreen
my husband keeps taking them out of the trunk when he cleans the car

Kroger actually creates a barrier at their U-scans. Since you are not allowed to place any items in the baggage area without scanning them first, I cannot use my bags unless I want my U-scan to freeze & not let me proceed with my order. Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe if I put my bags there before I touch the start button? I’ll try that next time.
Amanda
Our biggest problem is definitely remembering the bags. We usually try to keep a few in the car at all times. An incentive from the stores would be great. I’ve heard Kroger offers 5 cents off a bag in some areas but my Kroger doesn’t have that program unfortunately.
Thanks for the giveaway.

There are seven reusable bags in my trunk. The obstacle to using them is my bad memory. I never think of them until I am unloading my cart items onto the checkout belt. I really have to do better, I know.
Cindi
The biggest problem I have with using my reusable shopping bags is I have been using them as “catch all” bags and I might have magazines or books or my gym clothes or my piano books, etc. I just tend to grab them when I am on the go! I just don’t think to grab them when I walk into the grocery.
Jodi T
I forget to bring them to the store with me and don’t remember until I’m walking up to the checkout and see them hanging there!

I never remember my bags! I think if I started the habit of putting them in a special place in the van, I could do it. But a credit for using them could help too…… ;-)
I already designed a bag yesterday–very fun! And I subscribe to your blog—love it! Keep up the good work!

I always forget to bring my bags with me. I think if I got in the habit of keeping them in a certain place in the van, it would help. And a small credit for using them would probably help me too…… ;-)

I honestly have a hard time remembering them!!

I am with everyone else that I forget to put my bags back in the car.
HOWEVER, my biggest obstacle to using these bags is the lack of logic that happens when my purchases are bagged in the bags. I always bring in some larger reusable bags that are perfect for cereal boxes, etc. but the baggers always seem to put 6 cans and then my bananas and bread. So, they use some plastic bags after they run out of room, my groceries are more difficult to carry, and my bananas and bread get smashed. I never need plastic bags but somehow always end up with some. GRRRRR!
How do we change the rate of use? STOP PROVIDING PLASTIC BAGS! Stores should provide a limited number of bags that consumers have to pay for. Or, do away with the plastic bags completely. Maybe Americans will decrease their footprint on the planet if we take a page from the rest of the world…bye-bye produce bags, bye-bye free grocery bags. Hey, the chains could save money, too.
