Looking for another green freebie? Well, look no further. Kroger wants to give you a reusable shopping bag just for entering their reusable shopping bag contest. All you have to do is design your own reusable shopping tote, and they’ll credit your Kroger card for the cost of one of their bags.
Even better? When you submit your design, others will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite design. Great prizes will be awarded to the top 10 bag designs, with one lucky designer winning a $1,000 Kroger gift card and the chance for their bag design to be sold in stores. Judges will also select four finalists who will receive $250 Kroger gift cards and five runners-up who will receive $100 Kroger gift cards!
How’s that for an incentive to go green? And yes, that’s my not-so-creative bag pictured above.
Need another incentive?
Kroger has generously given me two $25 gift cards to pass on to two lucky winners to help draw attention to their green efforts. I hope you’ll all take a minute to create a bag and submit your design!
How can you win?
Share your biggest barrier to using reusable shopping totes. Is it hard to remember them? Do you have difficulties bagging your items? Would a small credit for using them be an incentive? Can you think of any ways to solve the issue? I’m just interested in your thoughts on the whole issue.

My biggest problem with reusable bags is that I never can remember to bring them to the store with me.

My biggest barrier to using reusable shopping totes is that I already have my hands full with my 2 toddlers when getting into a store!
Jessica
I don’t have a barrier anymore…I carry them all in my bag with my coupon book so I have them with me. What made me start was my grocery store gives me .05 credit for each bag I use. It’s hard to remember to use them at Target or Walmart, though, since they just automatically slide things into a bag.

I usually forget to bring my 5 to the store with me. But what I have remembered to do is fold 4 of them up and place them inside one, along with my coupons, shopping list, and sales flyer. It is a personal reminder for me then when I go shopping.

My biggest barrier to using fabric bags is to have them with me in the car! So I have numerous bags from various stores and even farmer’s markets we have visited! When I unload the bags after a shopping trip, I place them near the front door of our house. Then, the next time I go out to the car, I put them in the back seat. In that way, I always have numerous fabric bags with me – I probably have about 10 bags in all! One of my favorite grocery stores gives us bonus incentive points for each fabric bag we use on a shopping trip. Points can be redeemed for free products or gift cards. When I use them at other stores, I just feel good about helping the environment!

My biggest barrier is when my hubby goes shopping for me. He usually forgets the reusable shopping bags!

I love reusable bags and I take them with me everywhere. I can’t think of anything negative about them. They’re very sturdy and easy to carry. I love that many stores give you a small credit for using them.

I have a great basket I keep in the car with my reusable bags, but my biggest barrier is remembering to bring them into the store! I agree with another shopper that they are impossible to use at the U-scan. Also agree that if Kroger offered an incentive (or a disincentive in terms of charging for the plastic ones) then I would be more likely to go back out to the car to get them!
Joy
I’m on oxygen so it’s a bit cubersome with the oxgen tank and my purse plus the bags so I started putting my tank in the bag and away I go.

My biggest barrier to using reusable shopping totes is that I use the plastic bags to pick up dog poo when we go on our walks.

My biggest challenge really is just remembering to bring them in or to bring enough it. I even keep them in the Car but forget to grab them out. I am getting better though

It would be a lot better for me if I was offered an incentive. I use the plastic bags I get anyway, so unless they were going to give me a discount, I would be more likely not to carry in my own bags.

I really love the idea of using the reusable bags – but I leave my at home ALL THE TIME. I just need to get better on that – I think one solution for me is that after I am done unloading my groceries to take them and put them with my coupon binders, which I carry in a tote bag of its own – I never forget those!
On another note, I would personally love it if stores even gave a .05 or .10 cent discount per reusable tote or bag. I think that would be cool.

I never have my reusable bags with me. Once they come into the house, they don’t leave.
Another reason is that, I don’t know how many bags to take with me to the store. I feel like I always need multiple bags, but I don’t want to go into the store with a pile of reusable bags. I don’t mind bringing in my bags to places like Aldi, because if I bring in a whole pile, its the norm.
I think I would be more motivated to bring the bags, if I got a coupon in exchange for the bag. Or, if there was a 5cent discount.
Or, if you got points for every time you used a reusable bag. Then after so many points, you could exchange them for an extra penny item, or for an extra 3cent off coupon for gas.

I always forget the bags when I go to the store. I just need to keep some in the car that way I’ll always have some.
Alicia
I think my biggest hinderance to using the reuseable bags is leaving them behind when I leave to the grocery store. I have one from Target that has a hard bottom and I absolutely love it because it folds up to the size of a CD case so it can be really portable!
Julie
I agree, remembering to take those along, they are in my car, but I forget every time! Also different stores have different bags, wouldn’t it be nice if we could design our own and have those for every store instead of grabbing the wrong bag for the wrong store?
Alicia
