Walmart wants to help you stretch your back-to-school clothing budget. With basics priced at just $10 or less, you can dress your student for an entire week for under $50!
Yeah, yeah, yeah . . . I was a little skeptical too, but Walmart provided me with a $50 gift card to check it out for myself, and I’m happy to report that it’s absolutely true. I got all of the items pictured below for just $53!

Yeah, so I exceeded my budget just a tad, but my oldest boys are thrilled at the additions to their back-to-school wardrobe! We don’t have hand-me-downs since they’ve worn the same size for as long as I can remember (they’re 12 months apart), so I’m thrilled at how these savings have stretched our clothing budget.

We have most definitely cut back this year! As in….almost zero shopping. My best back-to-school tip is to take a few hours with your child, empty all their drawers and closets, and weed through their clothes and shoes. We found so many things, especially shirts, that my son forgot he had. It was like finding a second wardrobe.

use coupons, watch for sales, start shopping early

watch for sales all through the summer and dont wait until its almost time for school. Be shopping for the start of the school year all through the summer that way you dont have so much to buy.
Pamela Callahan
Buy when on sale! There are wonderful back to school savings if you wait until the middle / end of August for school supplies. As for clothing – reuse as much as possible but I would recommend starting clothing shopping at the end of the previous school year. If you pick up 1 item every now and then it is much easier on the checkbook than doing it all at once!

I think the best strategy is to include them in the plan. If resources are tighter, they can understand that. Go through their clothes with them and see what still fits. Then see what they want to wear and what they want to accessorize. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and they’ll want simple things like white tees and new socks.

I usually shop off season. I will wait for the clearance sales this year to stock up on things for next year.
Dixon
We only shop if it is on sale or we have coupons. I also don’t do it all for back to school because by Christmas time my son has usually out grown things, so we sort of shop seasonal.
Doug
Use coupons, watch for sales, take advantage of the tax free shopping days.
Harriet
More sack lunches, with fresh fruits and vegetables, no soft drinks.
Faith
shopping at Walmart for clothes, watching for sales at stores
Darby
I shop the clearance racks year-round and stock up on things for the kids to grow into. Our closets are stacked with boxes labeled with different sizes! It’s so exciting to pull out the next box and see what we got for next to nothing!
Elizabeth
use coupons, look for sales

My best tips are:
1. Buy only what is absolutely needed, they grow quicker then they wear things out.
2. Go through their clothing and take inventory on what they actually have and what they truly need.
3. I like to grab bargains when they are marked down at the end of the season, even though in November, the last thing on my mind is swimming .
4. The only time I pay full price is at Walmart, because their prices are reasonable:o)

Does preschool agers count in for this giveaway?
My biggest back to school savings is CVS extra care deals mid july, and walgreens– i got 8 or 9 packages of pens for basically nothing, as well as notebooks, and all kinds of great deals. A second “back to school” time is just after christmas when there’s all kinds of great sales. Lasts us through the year!
Kathy Luman
I watch clearance racks in the stores all year round. When I find a good deal on school supplies I would stock up for future use.

oh, and i subscribe via rss feed. :) Here’s to hoping…

For school clothes, I usually try to buy as much as possible at the previous year end of season clearance. I look for coupons for the things I need to buy right away (Kohls and Old Navy always have coupons). For back to school supplies, I shop Walmart in midJuly. They usually have things marked down that early, and it avoids the crowds in early August.

Going green can also be helpful at back-to-school time. Recycle, reuse, and rethink!
Rebecca
I, too, use CVS’s free after extra buck savings. I have two huge bags of materials to use throughout the year. I try to look for clearance at the end of every season to see what might work for next year. Plus, yard sales frequently have clothing that isn’t worn out, just outgrown. :)
