I’ve hinted about it for days now, and finally here it is – your chance to win a $500 Walmart gift card!!!
Just in time to make your holidays a little happier, Nickelodeon and Walmart have teamed up to offer this fabulous contest hosted by the Elevenmoms.
Yep, that’s right – each Elevenmom is giving away one $500 gift card on her blog, so you have 20 chances to win! Find details on the Elevenmoms site on how you can enter to win each one. Please note that you may only win once.
So who wants to add $500 to their holiday budget? You didn’t really think I was going to make this EASY for you, did you? You’re going to have to work a little bit for a prize this big.
In light of the tough economic times, this contest is all about discovering new ways to help each other save money. Yesterday I wrote a post detailing seven easy ways to cut at least $1 from your budget per day in the hopes that it would inspire you to participate in The One Dollar Give. I only just scratched the surface though, and I know that you all have some amazing tips to share as well.
So there you go – holiday-themed or not, I want you to share your best methods for cutting back by at least $1 a day!
Methods of Entry*
Every reader can submit up to three (3) different tips to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, or three for up to a total of 3 entries!!!
YOU MUST LEAVE A TIP WITH EACH ENTRY. ENTRIES THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES BELOW WILL BE DELETED.
1. Leave a comment sharing your best money-saving tip to cut at least $1 a day out of your budget!
2. Subscribe to my feed via RSS or email and leave a separate comment letting me know you have done so along with another money-saving tip. If you’re already a subscriber, simply leave a separate comment letting me know you’re already subscribed along with another money-saving tip. Lovin’ my subscribers! You guys make this all possible.
3. Spread the word about this contest in some manner and come back and leave a link in a separate comment along with another money-saving tip. If you have a blog, you can blog about it. But if you don’t have a blog, you’re not at a disadvantage. You could review and Stumble it. You could Twitter it. You could post about it in a forum. Use your imagination!
*Please read the rules for entering and the timeline information carefully as this contest differs from the usual giveaways that I host.
It is important that you leave a separate comment for each type of entry because each comment is equal to one entry. Sorry to harp on this, but it really is that important to tally and select the winner easily, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me simplify the process!
Prize:
1 $500 Walmart Gift Card
This giveaway ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, December 15th. The judges will select ten of their favorite entries to be highlighted on Deal Seeking Mom, and I’ll use Random.org to select the winning comment. The winner will be posted on Tuesday, December 16th, and the prize will be mailed out on December 17th. Good luck!
While you’re in a contest entering mood, don’t forget to check out the Giveaway Gathering for a variety of contests being hosted on Deal Seeking Mom readers’ blogs!

I will give two tips. One of the newest things that I love to do is unplug and turn off. Even at night we turn the heat off (even though it hits 20’s and 30’s here) and our bedrooms still remain warm. I set the heat to turn on if it hits 61 degrees. We unplug everything, even the tivos, if i know there is nothing that needs to be recorded. Try it! Look at your meter when things are how you normally would leave them, then go in each room and really look for things to power down. Then check the meter again.
Ok on to tip (2) constantly call up your service providers from time to time to ask is there anything better. Our unlimited long distance just went down to $4.99 a month! We pay for phone, dsl, and unlimited long distance $65 a month after taxs and fees!!

I am a subscriber and another tip for saving money is to cut your hubby’s and son’s hair yourself. I have done this for years and it has saved me a boatload of money! :) I don’t tackle my daughters however!! :)

When possible, run appliances during off-peak hours. For us, that just means getting in the habit of throwing in a load of laundry as soon as the kids go to bed and then running the dishwasher when we go to bed.

We save at least a dollar a day by always eating at home. If we’re out running errands I make sure to bring light snacks. Too many times our errands have taken longer than expected and we’re so hungry we’ll hit a drive-thru. Not anymore! We also pack lunches everyday.

My last tip to save $1 a day is to take your children on a nature hike and collect pine cones or wild flowers. They are a great way to decorate your home or save for projects for gifts… and you certainly save that way!

Hi! Love your site! First Tip:
Break down larger bags of snacks into your own “100 Calorie” packs using inexpensive sandwhich bags.

Freeze any dinner leftovers for those days that there was no time to make dinner, there’s only one or two people home, etc. Having other options on hand will help you resist the temptation to pay for take-out food.

There are some great ideas up there! I would definitely have to say using coupons has saved me hundreds of dollars a year on everything from food to diapers to drugstore products.

Tip #1: Make your own coffee! I’m a HUGE coffee drinker and I found myself stopping by Starbucks each day – almost four bucks a day!! When I moved to an area without Starbucks, I just ran through the drive thru at McDonalds…still a little over $1 a day. Now, I try to make my coffee before I leave each morning. Investing in a great coffee maker, cute mug, favorite flavorings and coffee is really a money saving investment!

My family saves money by turning our thermostat down at night and turning our heat completely off when we are not at home. We also pack my husbands lunch to avoid going out to eat. I also try to do multiple loads of laundry in one day so that the dryer is already warm and set to go for the next load. I do the same with the oven and try to bake multiple things in one day.

My money-saving tip: shop the grocery ads and stick to your list! Try buy the items that are on sale that week and by pairing them with coupons you’ll save even more!!

I’m also a subscriber, and my second tip would be to use compact fluorescent bulbs and other energy star appliances, and be intentional about conserving energy (keeping lights off when not in use, turn fans off when not in the room, etc.). It’s helped us to cut our electric bill by quite a bit.

Brewing coffee at home instead of buying it on my way to work!
