Beyond Earth Month Giveaway: Products to Help You Go Green Year Round

April 27, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski

earthmonth-giveawayEarth month is winding down now, but I’ve got a huge giveaway that will help you maintain your green efforts long beyond just this month. Included in this giveaway are the following items:

  • Bissell Little Green Machine
  • Clorox Greenworks Cleaners
  • White Cloud Recycled Paper Towels and Toilet Paper
  • Brita Water Filter Pitcher
  • Tide Cold Water Detergent – not pictured

I had the opportunity to try these products out myself, and I’ve been very pleased with all of them. I think of all of them, the Bissell Little Green Machine is my favorite because it makes cleaning up all of those little kid and pet messes so easy and convenient. The most surprising would be the White Cloud recycled paper towels and toilet paper. I was suprised by how soft they were!

How can you win?

My favorite “green” thing to do is make my own laundry soap. Works great and is really cheap!

I use old maps to wrap gifts in. It is the perfect size to wrap t-shirt boxes. Then, use rope or twine to wrap it up. You can use your AAA card and get FREE maps at any office. (as many as you want)

    To save water:
I installed low flow aerators on my faucets and showerheads.
I limit showers to 7 minutes.
Don’t waste water. Use the car wash instead of washing your car manually.
When boiling veggies, instead of pouring the leftover water down the drain and wasting those vitamins & minerals, use to water your plants.

I started using vinegar to clean pretty much anything. It’s cheaper and better for the environment.

I bring my own bags to the grocery store. I also put a gallon milk jug in the toilet tank to save water. We use CFL light bulbs. I also use vinegar as fabric softner.

My son bought me a nice aluminum water bottle for Christmas and I have loved using that as my water bottle. Now I don’t buy cases of plastic water bottles anymore!

I make some of my own cleaning supplies. Not only is it more green, but it’s less toxic and it’s cheaper. This is my favorite:

    Creamy Soft Scrub

    2 cups baking soda
    ½ cup liquid castile soap
4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin (acts as a preservative)
5 drops antibacterial essential oil such as lavender, tea tree, rosemary or any scent you prefer (optional)

Mix together and store in a sealed glass jar, shelf life of 2 years.

Composting is my favorite green thing to do. It reduces the amount of kitchen waste so much. Between that and recycling, we have so little actual garbage. Also use reusable water bottles.

We use the Sunday comics to wrap gifts, cfl bulbs throughout the house, thermal draperies, and save all the bubble wrap (instead of throwing it away) to insulate windows not seen from the street. It really makes a difference on our heating and cooling use.

My favorite simple green tip is to decline stores’ plastic bags & carry away your bargains in your purse or a reusable shopping bag. I always have to think twice when I’m staring at my items at the counter – remember to say, “You can keep the bag!”

I keep the lights off as much as possible and make it a point to turn them out when leaving a room, even if just for a few minutes. If it’s sunny out, throw open the blinds and shades, and let the natural sunlight light your home!

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
