This is my first year packing full lunches rather than just sending snacks. I’m doing a lot of reading the comments to learn what works for other people and I’ll keep in mind the foods that my kids already enjoy and figure out how to make them lunchbox handy.
Karen
Fruit and a note!

the kids help plan and pack their lunch boxes-they like veggies cut into small pieces-same with fruit

Hi, I am new to the site. My son started at a new school in our area that does not provide school lunch which in our area is very popular with 5 baked french fries and baked chicken breast green beans and apples. SO in packing lunches I will try to include thing from dinner the night before and some fun fruit snacks. I’m sure I will get the hang of it quick. I am open for any ideas and comments. They do have microwaves available for them to warm things which is great.

Walmart has these great pre-packaged apples and carmel snacks that my daughter loves.

Anything that the kids don’t want to eat gets cut into little quarter-sized pieces (carrot circles instead of carrot sticks, etc.) and they have to eat $1 worth or maybe $2 worth. It works for bananas at breakfast too, and they don’t seem to mind eating these healthy things anymore!

I love using tortillas in school lunches, great with cream cheese and veggies, meat and cheese, pb&j, and tons of other combos…

I like to make heart shape sandwiches and sometimes add marshmellows.

I have my child pick one healthy and one junk food option. I also become friendly with and get to know the lunch staff and tell my child they are watching (hehe) and making sure she’s eating her healthy choices. This is also helpful when she buys her lunch, so I know she is eating her veggies, lol.

I make lunch healthy by always including some fruit: apple slices, strawberries, grapes, etc. Thanks.

I liked putting a small tupperware container of applesauce in my girls’ lunches everyday. They always ate it!

I let my son choose what he wants for lunch each day (although I give him 2 or 3 choices), but I try to add a fruit or veggie, too.

Buy everything organic and sneak veggies to homemade bakes goods.

I use a cookie cutter to make sandwiches more fun and appetizing.

I think taking a peanut butter sandwich with thinly sliced apples on it is always a fun and interesting way to get some protien and fruit in your child.
Amber
My son has only been in preschool and did have his lunch there. Since he can’t read, I would just put a big heart on his napkin or a smiley face. My daughter’s going to preschool this year so I’m excited to do that for her, too!
Jen
Leaving special notes of encouragement in lunches is the best.

I make lunches healthy by always trying to include a protien, fruit and veggie (my kids get enough carbs without me focusing on them!) The fun is all in how they are packaged.

My kids lunches usually have a sandwich that the kids (6,9, & 11) make themselves in the morning or night before on whole grain bread. Then we make homemade granola, trail mix, muffins, yogurt, or other healthy snacks. Each kid gets to make their own lunch by making their sandwich to their liking and pick 2 snacks they really love to accompany it. A water, ice tea, or juice goes with each child . By giving them the ability to cook, prepare, and select their lunch choices, they are empowered to make healthy choices, and always get what they want.
