I actually had to convince my husband to stop buying white bread for our daughter. I found an article called ‘white bread, you’re dead’. it finally convinced him to let me buy whole wheat for ALL of us. Thank good ness that’s one lunch item that is healthier. Hope it helps someone.

I make lunches the night before, try to buy in bulk and use reusable containers instead of buying the more expensive and less green little portions. I always send a fruit or veggie even though it doesn’t always get eaten and send water or 100% fruit juice only.
Laurel
Gotta have fresh fruit.

I think the most important thing for my daughter is variety. I’m always throwing in some “surprise” to keep her excited and interested in what will be found in her bag. I also include notes – short since she can’t read yet.

I like to use reusable boxes for packing lunch. I can put veggies and dip in it that way and my daughter loves hummus and edamame.

My stepson is 12 years old so he actually pack his own lunch yesssssssssss, but what i do every sunday is cut lots of fruit and put it on litte ziploc bags , also cereal, nuts, healthy chips etc and that way he just have to decide what he wants to put on his lunch bag and i make sure he is eating healthy. And once a week i put money on his lunch bag so he can buy any snack he wants at school, each week is a different day and always a secret until that morning

I make a “wrap” for my son with a small tortilla, a turkey frank, cheese and lettuce. He thinks it’s much more special than a plain old sandwich!
Sue
I use whole wheat or whole grain whenever possible!

You can make lunches fun by leaving silly notes or pictures. It’s not a new idea, but an effective one.
Thanks for the entry!

To make school lunches healthy and fun I try to look for ideas on the internet like foodnetwork.com. I make ants on a log with celery, peanut butter, and raisins, cut fun shapes out of cheese, and pack veggies and fruit with some yummy dips. I also bake snacks that have pureed veggies hidden in them.

I like to “surprize” them with something they like, but have no idea will be included in their lunch. I don’t do this all the time, or they would become used to it, and check it out way before lunch time. It’s not a surprize if they open their lunch to look for it early. Sometimes it’s something extra to eat (fruit rollup) or sometimes it’s some new stickers, etc.

I try ro make lunch filling as my boys can EAT. It is not always easy to combine healthy, filling and cheap. Fortunately this blog has helped reduce expenses that make it where I can spend money on healthier choices.
Kelly
I try to pack different lunches so they don’t eat the same things everyday! It is a challenge for sure!
