Win-It Wednesday: 2nd Chance for a $100 Borders Gift Card!

June 23, 2010 by Deal Seeking Mom 827 Comments

Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:

Bring Your Book to Life!

A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds.  After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon.  Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!

Here are a few tips:

  • Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
  • Let them design what the scenery would look like
  • Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
  • And have fun!

Today, another lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!

To enter, tell me what challenges you face in trying to encourage your kids to read more.

Though they’re both MUCH better about their willingness to read than last year… for my daughter the challenge is getting her to come inside & focus on a book and not her bike or playing w/friends. For my son, it’s finding books that capture him..he’s a tough one..loses interest quickly.

The biggest challenge is getting her to put down the computer and actually start the book. Once she starts it then things are fine.

My son loves books and will bring them over to me and sit in my lap to read them but sometimes he just flips through so fast. My challenge I guess is to get him to slow down, but he is only 2 so don’t think thats going to happen:)

My son loves to read once he actually sits down to read. It’s getting him to sit down that is a challenge.

Luckily, I don’t have a problem getting my kids to read. I have a problem having enough reading material around for them!

The challenges I face in getting my daughter to read are all the other distractions that kids have now like the computer, ipod, cell phone. However, when she finds a book she really loves she can’t seem to put it down! So I guess the biggest challenge is helping her find books to really hold her interest!

I have not yet encountered any trouble getting my 9 year old son to read. He has grown up in a house full of books and readers! Reading has just been a part of his everyday life.

Finding books that interest them. I have four boys and I seem to find tons of books for girls but not boys.

Finding material that they will be interested in enough to keep them in the book. They start to read and get bored.

I think the hardest is getting them to listen to their mom.

I buy books from savers, good will or just go to the library. My son likes to read in front of people, s when the family gets together for Sunday brunch we have him choose a book to read infront of everyone. My daughter is a different story. It take her some time to read a book. At times when she starts to get bored she starts to guess at the words. I just back step and breath and help her out with sounding out the 1st letter and the rest of the book. They both have come a long way this past yr in school, 1st grade this coming fall. They where given a reading list for the summer. I was surpised how long it was. Gift card from Borders would be helpful in getting the hard to find books

my daughter is usually pretty good at reading…although by the time we get to the very end of the book she starts to get distracted.

My daughter loves to read! No challenges at all with her, but my stepson is a totally different story. I have trouble finding books to keep him engaged and challenged at the same time.

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
