Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!
As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

Reading together in the evenings is a family event…we take turns reading to each other. We spend time picking out books together at the library and bookstores.

My three kids are not reading yet, but the oldest is just starting to. Each morning he wakes up and we go on the porch with anything of his choosing that has words. Usually it is a book, but sometimes it’s a newspaper, cereal box or even a shampoo bottle. He sounds out the words until he gets hungry. Then when the little brother takes a nap, the two older ones take advantage of the quiet and read/pretend to read to each other.

When I was little my mom used to pay me for book reports. I would read a book and write a report on it, she would grade/edit it and we’d go over how to fix it. For every completed book report I got $10.
In my book, a little cash is ALWAYS a great incentive =)

Love to read to my 2 year old!

My kids love books. To encourage them I leave out books, magazines, and other interesting reading material in the cozy places around the house that they frequent. I love hearing, “Mom, check out this cool book I found!”

I get my kids to read by saying NO to electronic media for the day…or bringing them to the library! :)

I think when you read to your kids at a very early age it instills a love of reading that carries on through the years.
Mel
I think using the library often and letting kids pick their own books is helpful to encourage reading. Also I like to buy books at garage sales and thrift sales so we have tons of fun books to read all the time!
Cassi
I take my boys to the library weekly during the summer months!!! They really enjoy reading~

We sign up for the library reading program and try to go once a week to get new books– I find that if they can change them up, they will want to read or be read to more!
Carol
My kids are grown now, but when they were young, the one thing we always said “yes” to requests for was books. It was the same when I was a kid back in the ’50s: my folks didn’t have much money, but there was usually enough for a Little Golden Book or at least a comic book. I think having their own books that they pick out themselves is a big motivator for kids to read; another one–and this is a BIGGIE–is seeing their parents reading.

Just expect it. Kids know better than we do what we really think they will do, and often they comply. If you just KNOW your son won’t want to read, then he probably will be happy to oblige.

My little one is only 2, but to encourage reading, we have a ton of books (that I rotate out to keep interest) and go to the library at least once a week.

My daughter isn’t old enough to read yet, but I hope to instill a love for reading in her by reading to her every day!

My kids are 4 and 2 and they really enjoy being read to! We visit our local library each week and pick out new books. We read books at bed time. For the summer…..we are going to try to implement some more day reading too!!
