Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

During the summer break my daughter participates in the public library summer reading program. They have a different educational presentations each week and the kids get prizes for reading books. We make a habit of going to the library each week to check out a book or two to read.

My son is going into second and has really put this reading thing together… so I will act like I don’t know how to read a word and have him tell me and then before you know it he’s reading it to me :) OR I’ll read a book to his younger brother and pretend stumble on a word so he’ll come over and take over. He’s reading everything — signs, menus, he’s really getting the hang of it and I’m thrilled !

Let kids pick out what they want to read. Maybe that’s fiction, maybe it’s non-fiction. Maybe it’s an atlas or a comic book or a magazine. Reading, especially in the summer should be fun and a pleasure activity (except maybe the boring books that are on school summer reading lists). So let each kid decide what they are going to read. And get involved in what they read. Read some of the same books. Talk about what they’re reading, and what you’re reading. Read books together. And make sure the kids see you reading for pleasure as well.

I encourage my kids to read during the summer a few ways. They have a subscription to Sports Illustrated Kids, which they really enjoy reading. Also, we participate in a few summer reading programs.

My 19 month old son loves books – he likes a book on the table at breakfast time and he goes into his bedroom and points to the book shelf. I have found that having books about what he likes (trains and dogs at the moment) is very helpful.

We always sign my preschooler up for the reading program at our local library… she gets to choose whichever books she wants and there are fun incentives!

My kids LOVE when I read to them. I am a huge reader and my 2 little boys 17 mos and 5 yrs love reading, my 10 yr old daughter isn’t much for reading. She says it’s boring unless it’s non-fiction about animals. So about the only way to get her willingly into a book is to read it myself. We are reading Charlie and the Glass Elevator right now.

My kids join the library summer reading program. They can win prizes and that inspires them. Also, we homeschool throughout the entire year, so they are required to read.
