Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:
Bring Your Book to Life!
A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds. After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon. Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!
Here are a few tips:
- Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
- Let them design what the scenery would look like
- Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
- And have fun!

I know these days it’s difficult getting any child at any age to read when there’s so many stimulating influences but you can always offer their fave for reading for a certain amount of time! My daughter loves to read so for me the only obstacle is getting her enough books to keep her indulged! so I would love to win the $100 gift card because times are tough & getting her more books is challenging!

I don’t have kids of my own, but I teach special education. One of the biggest challenges I have in getting them to read is having books that they are interested in- and being able to buy them on an ever smaller school budget.

The challenges for my boys 7 and 8 are just stubborness. They like to read when they want to read. But when I try to do the recommended 20 mins a day all the time they get annoyed with me :-) I use reading as a way for them to get what they want, which is video game time.

My son doesn’t have the same love of books I had *sigh*
In this age of multi-tasking, ever-changing visual stimulation – books just don’t hold the same allure. It also doesn’t help that he has a slight learning disability so reading has always been a chore for him.
I usually tell him to give any book 30 minutes, or one chapter (depending)… if it’s something good that’s usually enough to suck him in :)

I have twin two-year-old boys, so my biggest challenge is getting them to sit still long enough to get through a story.

Of course, I have a little boy who LOVES to do so many things, and reading is one of them. However, in summer it is SOOOOO hard. So, we read at night, right before bed!
