Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:
Bring Your Book to Life!
A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds. After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon. Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!
Here are a few tips:
- Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
- Let them design what the scenery would look like
- Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
- And have fun!

My daughter likes the books she reads once she actually reads them. She is more focused on playing or tv–really anything else. :(

My 11 year old who normally loves to read suddenly began to show little to no interest in something we used to treasure… reading. When we went to the Library to pick out new books he would pick out videos to watch. At my wits end I heard of a movie that was coming to the theater that I knew he would love so I played the trailer over and over on Yahoo and then when I knew he was interested I hit him with the bomb. I suggested we read the series ( a chapter nightly) so when the movie came out we would be familiar with the storyline, characters and could judge what was best the book or the movie. The first few nights he refused to read aloud and I did all the reading but by week two he was looking forward to it, and read not only to me but to his younger brothers. I talked to him about his loss of interest and he shared something with me that I hadn’t considered, at his age the books in his age group were now huge. Turns out he felt intimidated by the larger books. Problem solved. Now if we could only win that Borders Gift card he loves the J R R Tolkien series.

Now that she is out of the routine of school, I have to get her to stop playing her video games or watching the show she really wants to watch so she will read. I am encouraging her with our summer library reading program and a reading log.

my kids are not allowed to use computer (for playing) until they read at least 25 pages of a book a day and talk with me about it

both of my daughters( 9 yr and 2 yr old) love books:) we are really happy that we were able to give them the interest and encourage it every day. My elder daughter started reading on own by the age of 4 and after that taking her to library and signing up her for reading programs and keep reading a everyday practice made her like reading very much. She can read books sometime for couple of hrs with out any other thought. My second daughter developed interest by seeing her sister and also started reading books to her at very early stage. I always appreciate and keep my daughter active in reading programmes during summer. I limit the time of watching TV or playing games at regular basis itself, so that made very easy for them to like reading just at any time.

I don’t have kids yet. My nieces love books. We are still working on extending their attention span so that they will sit through a whole book.

For my son, it is too many other things he wants to do. With us going to the library each week to get books and check in for the summer reading program, we have also been picking up some DVDs, which means more show options. At bedtime, he always wants to play games – which are fun, but we try to balance this with bedtime reading.
