Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:
Bring Your Book to Life!
A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds. After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon. Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!
Here are a few tips:
- Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
- Let them design what the scenery would look like
- Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
- And have fun!

I have two young kids who loved to be read to so it isn’t much of a challenge. I guess the only challenge is having the little one sit still without trying to turn the pages before we finish reading the page

Weather is the biggest challenge. They love outdoor activities whenever possible. Swimming, camping for summer, skiing for winter.

My daughter loves reading, but sometimes it takes a little persuasion because she’d rather do something else. Reading together is always a winner ;)

My biggest challenge with my 6 year old is that he won’t hush his mouth long enough to read! He reads aloud well, though, so it’s only a problem when I want quiet time. We read a lot here, so there’s no difficulty in getting him to read.

I never really had a problem getting my daughter to read. She just does it on her own and loves it.

The biggest challenge for me at the moment is finding time to read to my baby when I spend so much time reading already to my toddler. it’s hard to find time to read an equal amount to both, especially when my baby seems more interested in eating the book than reading it!

I’m an auntie – and a challenge i have in getting kids to read is patience … both of the reader and the child. A variety of books helps!

Like everyone else is saying… it is definitely a patience issue. I have taken some great mental notes from the story-time readers at our local library though, and using the tone of your voice, facial expressions, and sounds really helps get the kids interested. They love being so animated.

My children love to read. They have trouble sitting still for long stories so we take turns reading each page. They make up a story by looking at the pictures and then I read the page to them.

During the school year, my son LOVES to read. This summer, my biggest challenge in getting him to read is his Nintendo DS and his new Pokemon game!
