Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they want to encourage kids to read — and enjoy doing it — with a fun reading challenge/ Have your child under 12 years old sign up at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
Harper Collins has this tip for helping kids enjoy reading:
Bring Your Book to Life!
A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds. After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon. Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later!
Here are a few tips:
- Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
- Let them design what the scenery would look like
- Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
- And have fun!

My daughter loves to read! No challenges as of yet. :)
Laycie
Greatest challenge…why read when you can play games on wii, xbox or playstation?!
Christie
Both of my children love to read or be read too. The problem we have in the summer is that they are so busy outside that when it’s time to come in, they are so exhausted they crash. I feel like a couple days go by without a good night story. The other problem is to change up the book they want to read. Both of my boys want to read/hear the same story every time!

Having the kids all focused on one book!
Pat
No problem with my son to read, we were in Borders on Sunday buying books. We are both big readers.
Rachel
I don’t have kids yet so I don’t have any challenges, but I know that when I was little my mom would help encourage me to find books about something I was interested in, or maybe something related to a tv show or movie we had seen.

The biggest challenge for me is finding enough books for them to read since we are in a small town with a limited library!

I subscribe in a reader!

I think the biggest challenges are the t.v. and the internet! My oldest daughter who is nine prefers playing games on the internet, but she does enjoy a good book. Additionally I think finding a quiet place to read is sometimes a challenge for her. She has a three year old sister that never leaves her side and a five year old brother that loves to agitate them. This summer I used some of the reading rewards programs to encourage her.

My son loves to read, but the challenge is getting him to read more difficult books. He’d prefer to stay in his comfort zone where he can read easily and not labor over sounding out new words.
Candice
They get distracted by what is going on in the house, particularly if someone else is playing video games >.<

A dad here, my son rather run around outside, it’s hard to get him to sit down and remain still for any amount of time, even on rainy days.

I don’t have any children of my own, but I know that one thing that helps kids want to read is to help them get excited about stories, whether it’s reading about the things that interest them most, wandering a bookstore with them and pointing out fun titles or reading aloud with them in your best accent!
Kristi
My challenge with getting my kids to read is to simply get them to sit still long enough at one time. They love for me to read to them, but can only get a little bit into the book before they are off and running.
Kristi
I subscribe!

My 4 year old loves to be read to, and enjoys trying to read the stories himself. He comes up with very interesting versions! :)
Becky
I have a daughter who is only reading for a year and don’t want her to lose interest or push her to read more, I want her to keep the love for reading.
Lynn
The biggest challenge I face is the problem of distractions – the TV, the Internet, and video games!

One challenge I face in trying to encourage my kids to read more is getting them to read a wider variety of books.
Judy
My granddaughters love books! The 8 year old enjoys reading a variety of subjects; her 4 year old sister “reads” by looking at any pictures and instantly puts together her own story based on the pictures – very creative and totally make sense! They would love a gift card to get some new books!!
