Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

We’re a reading family so sometimes I actually have trouble taking books away from my girls. We go to the library at least once a week during the summer and participate in story time and special programs. This always seems to fuel their love of reading just a little more. Often we have to search for the featured book or books regarding the topic of the presentation which is fun. Also, we have very limited tv viewing and a structured friend schedule during the summer.

My kids and I have “reading time” in the afternoon, and we sit down and read books together that we get from the library

We also participate in our local library’s summer reading club. They enjoy seeing their progress on the chart as they read more and more.

We join the library summer reading programs. I didn’t know the books stores had one, but I will be checking those out this summer. I have older kids who like to play video games and watch TV, so we created a chart. When they read for 30 min, they get 15 min of TV or video game time. Of course, they had to do the reading first. And we allowed them to read to their younger brother and count that time as well, that way he felt like he was part of the big kids group.

My tip is basic, I get books based on what interests her. If it’s cats – we read cat nooks all summer long, even if we reread some. Sometimes – in order to make time to read, we all have reading time where everyone sits down and reads for a half hour. Thankfully the “cat” phase is over and she has moved on to the lightening thief books (can’t remember the name of the actual series).

My kids are older so I don’t have to monitor their reading, however, they do share my joy of reading and continue to do so on their own.

We join the Summer Reading Program at the library and when they read every week, they get a little prize.

We go to the library and I let the kids pick out a huge stack of books, then we come home and read. Also, the kids like to play school and take turns “leading story time”.

I get books that my daughter picks out herself and we try to do activities that involve a theme from the books. PBS has a great program called ” read, view, do”, where you read a book, view something related to the book on tv and do an activity on something related to the book. As a preschool teacher as well this really gets the children involved in the books.

Read along with them and model good reading behaviors.

My 5 older kiddos enjoy reading, we take time each day even if it’s just 10 mins to sit down, grab a book and get a lil reading in….then they talk about anything/everything they find exciting about theie readings.

I trade tv or wii time for reading time. Now that my kids are older, I also have them do reading time during their former “rest” times.
Beth
Its so hot and humid mid-day that after lunch we always have book time. We just cuddle on the couch for 30 minutes or so and read books. My 5 year old is starting to sound out the words and my 2 year old like to pick out the letters that she knows
Bill
The kids and I always have ice cream after reading time so we can discuss their books
Jennifer
Reading is a family event in our house! My kids are young, so my husband and I still read with them, and everyone enjoys the time spent together. It’s just as fun for me to watch the kids get excited over books as it is for them to hear new stories and adventures.

My son is almost 9 months old…and he loves for me to read to him. It is the only time of day that he will sit still for more than 2 seconds. :) So, I guess my tip would be to read to your child…it is such a special time for us both. I loved when my mom read to me when I was little too.
Erika
My kids are younger and already LOVE to read but I will keep instilling this in them as a teacher myself:) I’m always picking up new books for them to read and learn from!

My kids have a set amount of time they have to read everyday or they lose privileges.
